SPEAKER_05Thank you for letting it loose with us. Now let's get into the show.
SPEAKER_07Vámonos. Hi everybody, it's me, Gloria Stefan. Welcome to Let It Loose with Carlos Rob and West.
SPEAKER_05Don't miss it. Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of Let It Loose. My name is Rob. I'm Wes. And I'm Carlos. And today we're just having a fun conversation about our all-time favorite music videos of Gloria's career.
SPEAKER_04This is tough because I know that we're talking about all-time favorite, but this is my maybe all-time favorite today, but tomorrow it may be a completely different list.
SPEAKER_05No, 100%. Like I was looking up on YouTube yesterday to prepare for this, and there were some videos I'd never even seen before. So I was like, oh my god, that song has a video? Like, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Are you serious? Yeah, I think it was a can't forget you. Really? You didn't know that? Oh well, I was two when that came out.
SPEAKER_04Well, Angel Max, my friend, um, he commented about that recently that he didn't even know that there was a video. I was like, that's one that I discovered way later.
SPEAKER_05Because it wasn't on a home video release, it wasn't on like any of those compilation tapes that we had growing up. Right.
SPEAKER_06And it didn't, yeah. And that's the thing for us growing up, VH1. You know, we either got the videos we we saw the videos that received a lot of airplay, and there were a lot of them that did. Like all the videos from Let It Loose, we saw those. Um Eyes of Innocence. There were only two videos. Prisoner of Love is like the hidden gem that a lot of people don't know about, but it is on YouTube. Um Primitive Love falling it, um falling in love. That one was kind of a hidden gem. I mean, it it was released, but it wasn't all these were released, but they just didn't receive a lot of airplay for whatever reason.
SPEAKER_05That's a wild video. If anybody has not seen it lately, like the mannequins mannequins, yeah, exactly. It's terrifying. Yeah, exactly. That one and bad boy. Was it Bad Boy with the cats? There were two versions of Bad Boy. That scared the hell out of me uh growing up. Yep. Um, because I think I've said it before on this podcast, Cats the Musical was on Broadway at the time, and in New York City, in the Tri-City area, you would get a commercial every five minutes of like these crazy dancers, people dressed like cats who would like come into the audience and touch you and all sorts of things. And I was like, Wow, how terrifying as like a three-year-old. And then and then Gloria's like, what a great idea for a video. And I was like, Are you guys are you kidding me? Like, I thought I could come enjoy Gloria Stefan in peace, and now they're these cats too. Terrifying. She did it specifically for you.
SPEAKER_06And that was the second version, and the first version was kind of a hidden gem until um it was released digitally years and years later. It was filmed. The first one was filmed, I think they call it or the fan community called it the poodle version. The poodle it was filmed at the Fountain Blue, yeah, on Miami Beach.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, actually, had a note here regarding that. So, do you guys have a preference when uh the poodle versus cats?
SPEAKER_06I like I like the sheep petabone remix, and that's the version that was in the cat, the cat version.
SPEAKER_04Okay. All right, how about you, Rob?
SPEAKER_05Not the cat version, not the cat version. Absolutely not. I mean, it's a great video, it's a really great video, but those cats are scary.
SPEAKER_04I love that video. And remember when remember when VH1 did the pop-up video uh for the bad boy video? That was cute.
SPEAKER_06I don't remember, I don't remember that one. Yeah, I remember seeing pop-up videos for the other ones, but I don't recall. Yeah, I don't remember any of the it'd be cool to go back and watch those to get some facts.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it would be I think it's it's on YouTube, I believe. I don't know, I have to check. But anyways, before we dive into our favorite music videos, um, let's let's have a little history lesson.
SPEAKER_06All right, let's do it. So this week in Gloria History, let's do another quiz. We had we had a Spanish song peak at number one on the Billboard Hot Latin songs chart this week.
SPEAKER_04This week, we don't we don't know what year.
SPEAKER_06In the last 50 years, one last year. In the last 50 years, she had to be. What singles were released around this time?
SPEAKER_05If I was good, eat my shorts, Wes. Right. Uh Noyotis? Noyotis is a good guess.
SPEAKER_06Nope, that's not the one I've got. That's not the one you have.
SPEAKER_05Probably is also correct, though.
SPEAKER_04Um I have to go back. It's number one, is it number one on Hot Latin tracks? Uh is it all Latin songs? Yeah, it was Oi.
SPEAKER_05Oi? Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_06Number one. Bob, you're on a roll.
SPEAKER_05I'm doing great. Number one for two weeks. Last season, but this season I'm I'm crushing.
SPEAKER_06Yep, you got it. Number one for two weeks, and total of 26 weeks on the chart.
SPEAKER_04I love that song. I love that song. I love that video. Oh, you're actually talking about the video. Speaking of videos, maybe that's one of my favorites. Speaking of a good one. All right, so cue the music. Let's go.
SPEAKER_06This was tough, just picking five. And I guys, I fought for it, and I was like, I think we should pick a favorite from each album, but they're like, no, it'll be way too long of an episode, so I was shot down. So I was gonna talk.
SPEAKER_05We know you could talk for two and a half hours.
SPEAKER_06Trying to educate and wax poetic, but trying to educate our our listeners on stuff they may not know.
SPEAKER_05We have you edit these episodes if you want to.
SPEAKER_06Hey, I hey, I offered to learn.
SPEAKER_05I know. You did, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And you will learn. Listen, there's one thing that you're great at, Wes, and that's offering.
SPEAKER_06I told you I would do it. Send that shit to me. I mean, I I can use a computer and edit. Yep. Guys, just so you know, I have offered. They they put they keep me in my lane and I stay there.
SPEAKER_04Well, just so you know, Laura's not with us for for this episode, but before we join, I did tell her that I was gonna be picking on US. So just be prepared. Just for this episode, we're gonna be able to do that. Just for this episode. Let's bring it. No, I'll behave, I'll behave. I'll behave. All right, let's see. So I'm gonna get started with my my favorite pick. I'll bring it up. You guys, before you guys go ahead and take my video, I'll I'll start. Um, Oye is probably Gloria's hottest video that she has ever recorded. The song is sexy, the video is sexy, the the cover to the single, which was uh photographed by uh Maggie Rodriguez.
SPEAKER_06I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_04Yes, that photo is probably one of the hottest photos for a single cover um that was ever released.
SPEAKER_06But this video, my it's got the it's from the video. It's from the video, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yep. So Maggie, and the only reason I know this is because I've posted that uh cover before, and Maggie has made sure to repost it and put her, you know, tag herself. So I'm like, oh, okay. Um what what an incredible video. So that was an amazing era, right? So we had we had just gotten uh Heavens Would I Feel, and then the next single was Oye, and I mean it was just hot. The only thing there is one thing that bothers me about the video, though. They had that one Gloria look-alike, um, with the curly hair. I don't know if you guys uh it oh I don't remember that. I have to forget about her, just put Gloria, focus on Gloria. Gloria could just be she could be just as sexy. Um but for some reason they went ahead and included this, you know, this one look-alike to to have these little sexy moments and stuff. But she just looked amazing. That the curly hair with the streaks, with the blonde streaks, um the different outfits. It was just you could tell that she was in her element, she was just feeling, I mean, that whole era, right? You could tell that she was just feeling good. She there's uh clips where you could find her talking about how she's in party mode, and and I think she was preparing for the um the the millennium concert, and there was supposed to be a tour after that, which didn't happen, but um you could tell that she was just feeling good, and she was uh you could tell that she was feeling good in her skin. Um, you could tell that she was happy with what she was putting out uh um to the world. So it was very evident with that video, and I think it's probably one of the best ones that she's ever recorded.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was I completely agree. Um, I love that era where Oye and Don't Let This Moment End, which is on my list, have like similar concepts where the concept is just I'm gonna look hot. That's it, yep, y punto. I'm gonna look great, I'm gonna serve looks, I'm gonna be in a club. End of story.
SPEAKER_04Can I can I make a comment about don't let this moment end? Yeah, please. So I really love what they did with that video, especially there was that effect where you know they're they're the the camera's like focused on her, but everything is cleaned out, you know, slow-mo, fast mo. That was something like that was like new technology at that time. So to see her with the big poofy hair, um, she looked amazing, the ever very colorful. It was such a fun video. My only comment about that video is I wasn't a fan of some of the editing because they used a lot of the same clips over. Um, if you go back and note, if you go back and take a look, you'll see that there's quite a few, especially there's one um there's one scene where she's like looking back. Yes, they used that one scene a couple of times. Over and over again.
SPEAKER_05So the the concept of Oye is Gloria's looking hot, everybody's looking great, they're sweaty in a club. The concept of don't let this moment end with Gloria forgot her car keys and she's looking for them in the club. Because every single scene she's looking around. She had her eyes lost or I lost somebody, and where's my where's my purse? I don't know what it is, but she's just like walking around like confused and like looking looking looking mysterious, right? So I don't know if there's a a mystery happening in the club, I don't know if she can't find her car keys, she's lost her pocketbook, she lost her shoes. I don't know what it is, but there's a mystery in this club, yeah. And then all of a sudden she has short hair.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, um, how did you feel about the short hair?
SPEAKER_05Well, the short hair was interesting for me because I was in the eighth grade at the time, and my eighth grade teacher got her hair cut to look like that. Really? So I was like, is that Mrs. Savage doing don't let this moment end? But no, it's Gloria.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. That was imagine if Mrs. Savage would have walked in with the big, you know, afro.
SPEAKER_06So this which she was testing the short hair look with the wig, and then she ended up doing it two years later.
SPEAKER_04Exactly.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, or a year later. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So there's here's another another story, and this one was shared. My ex-girlfriend, actually, who's also a fan, um, shared this with me. And I don't know if this is supposed to be public knowledge or not, but there's a reason why Gloria had the short hair. According to this person, Gloria had mentioned that she went to get her hair done, and the hairstylist at that time, whoever she was seeing, uh, burned her hair and had and ended up having to cut it.
SPEAKER_06Oh, you mean like for real? Oh, really?
SPEAKER_04Like, no, for like for real, for real. Yeah, so that's that's a story um that was shared. I can I have a lot of people sharing stories, and I don't know. And none that I know, well, I mean, I could ask Gloria, but it'll be every you know five minutes. Hey, did this really happen? Exactly. So yeah, I I really enjoyed that short hair on the cover of the of the single. Um, I don't know, it something seemed off with her with that short hair in the actual video. I I preferred it on the cover versus uh the video. I didn't enjoy it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, there was a different look, yeah. But back then it was cool because that video wasn't again on any home video release, right? No, right? It wasn't.
SPEAKER_06So it was I had to buy it on a um there was an ETV, like ETV network was a promo. Um they released like promotional videos and singles for clubs and stuff. I had to buy it on DVD to even watch it, like on a promo DVD.
SPEAKER_05So, like, how cool when you're 10 years old, 11 years old, and you're flipping through the channels, and there's a whole new Gloria music video that you didn't know was out or even existed. Like, that's how I discovered that one. That's how I discovered the My Boy video. Like, randomly at all hours of the night, the videos would be on, and that's how those ones that are a little bit more deep cuts I discovered.
SPEAKER_04Well, that one a lot of us discovered. Well, don't don't let this moment end. A lot of us discovered it during the uh live by request.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, live by request.
SPEAKER_04Live by request. Okay, so during that um concert special, they um they actually premiered uh video.
SPEAKER_05Yep. Well, I used to have that tape. I have no recollection of that. That's what they're doing.
SPEAKER_06It's on it's on YouTube. Um no, it has an MR, but like, but um, I don't know that that I don't I don't I don't remember that either, Rob.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I yeah, so that I could I could corroborate and I could I know for a fact that it did premiere. Um that was the first time that I had ever seen uh snippet of that video.
SPEAKER_06Huh. Interesting. I remember they mentioned it in like one of the newsletters from the fan club, but yeah, then we didn't then we got Don't Stop, the DVD home video release. The the video came out in October, then the home video release, Don't Stop, with all the music videos came out in November, right around November, December. And I remember all of us being like, Why wasn't that song on there? We were ticked. And then there was a version of Everlasting Love from the Evolution Tour that said it was live in LA and it was not live in LA. It was the same one from from the um evolution tour Miami, and I'm like, they could have used they could have used that space for the the Don't Let This Moment In video. But the same director, the same director did Don't Let This Moment In and Oye.
SPEAKER_05That makes sense. I could see that they have similar vibes.
SPEAKER_04Those were I mean, we we got some great videos during that time. So we had Heavens What I Feel, um uh Oye, Don't Let This Moment In, and then Don't Stop, we got we had Cualibre, oh we actually got a few videos.
SPEAKER_06And Don't Stop was released on the Don't Stop DVD. I don't know if it was actually released as a music video. It was her like performance at uh Studio 54, the album release party.
SPEAKER_04I wanted to be there, of course. You know, at that point in my life, I was too poor, too young to make it up to to New York, but I did, I was able to go to the album release party um on Lincoln Road, which I was a little disappointed because we we already knew about Studio 54 and the performances, so I was hoping for the same uh during the Lincoln Road um album release party. But she all she did was she went on stage and she did that that high note uh from Heaven's What I Feel. She just wanted a showcase and show off that she could do she could do that, that she could do it, and she did it live. So she jumped on stage one, did it, and then made her way over to the main stage and did it again. Um, and there were there were about like 10,000 people on Lincoln Road that that night. That was actually the first the first time that I had ever met Glenn.
SPEAKER_06Wonder if they recorded that or filmed it.
SPEAKER_04There's there's some snippets on on YouTube. So yeah. All right, so I have Oye, Rob, don't let this moment in. Wes, what's your pick?
SPEAKER_06So the first one I have on my list is one that you know I remember first seeing as a kid, and I love that album. It cuts both ways, as I mentioned many, many times, but get on your feet's my on my number is on my the first on my list. Yeah, I love that video. It was like filmed during rehearsal for the get on your feet tour. I actually found something somewhere, it was like filmed in early September of 89, and then two weeks later is when they kicked off the get on your feet tour in um Europe.
SPEAKER_04So that was a fun video, especially like when she's behind the curtain, all the bands, all the bands there, they're having a blast.
SPEAKER_06That's so that's why it's my favorite. I love it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I and I love the look, which is the look that she had for that tour. Yep. So which Wes, you've mentioned this before. The look that we ended up seeing on tour wasn't the original look. Um, or the clothes that she ended up wearing. Um, there was an issue with uh with that. Um, I think whatever they originally had didn't make it to like wherever they were, uh to your yeah, I'm not sure if it was Europe or wherever. And um they had to have uh something else either made at that moment or shipped.
SPEAKER_06Um it looks very similar, I think, but I have to go back and look at pictures. I don't I don't I don't know. I I'd have to go look at pictures, but I remember the story. Yeah, you telling that.
SPEAKER_03Wait, I thought you told that story.
SPEAKER_06No, I don't think so. No, you you were the one that was. We're just making shit up now. No, you you told that story because I didn't unless I'm having a a um neuro neurologic event here, but no, I don't remember. I um I you were the one that told that story because she told you.
SPEAKER_05I think you did tell the story, but you're trying to make it sound more legit by saying Wes corroborated. People will believe the white man for me.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, get on your feet is is uh is a fun video. It's a classic. It's a classic. Um, another one on my list, and I I have to include this one because I was actually one of the extras uh in this video, which is Hotel Nacional. Um, that was such a fun experience. She went ahead, Gloria went ahead and opened it up for the fans, you know, whoever could make it to Miami to join in and be an extra. And quite a few of us uh went, and my god, it was so much fun. Coincidentally, they filmed the video in the ballroom, the same hotel where my family has a condo uh at the beach. So I, you know, as soon as they said the location, I was like, Oh, I'm very familiar with uh with the location. And we we get there, and what was so fun was well, first of all, you had the option of either kind of having this goth look or more or like a steampunk kind of vibe, you know. So they asked everyone to bring both vibes, and then they will, you know, whoever was directing would tell you, okay, we're gonna go with with this. So with mine, I had like this long gothic trench coat type of look. Um we have photos. Um, I do have photos, yeah.
SPEAKER_06All right, we need I want to see this because I don't think you ever uh you told the story, but I don't ever did they allow you to take photos in there?
SPEAKER_04Um we took one photo. Uh I have one photo of of Gloria and I. Um so oh no, I think I have seen that. Yeah, they're interrupted. So we go into the ballroom and uh dancers are all there, and a lot of the dancers um uh I recognize or we recognize because a lot of the dancers for Hotel Nacional were dancers that were in the Wippa video. Um so it was it was fun to actually see these these people that we had just seen in this other video. Um it As much fun as we had, it was exhausting though, because I remember it was probably three or four in the morning and they were still going. And it's just like take after take. It was exciting being there with um Kenny Ortega. Uh so that was, you know, Kenny Ortega's huge um in in that world. Um besides directing Gloria's videos. Uh what was it that he did? It was uh high school musical, right? Yeah, and Hocus Pocus. So it was uh it was um pretty cool to see you know this legend.
SPEAKER_06I should have a trivia question. How many other videos did Kenny have?
SPEAKER_04I know C L or Fate. C or Fate was one that he directed. What was his first one? What was the first one? I know that he's the first one. I know that he's been involved with tours. Um was it coming out of the dark? No, no, was it during the let it loose era? Yeah, it was rhythms gonna get you, wasn't it? Yeah. Oh okay.
SPEAKER_06And Bet just say that.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I didn't know about Betchase That.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, because the Betchese I'm I don't know if there was I mean there really wasn't choreography from that from that tour, but um yeah, the I read somewhere where the you know the Bet just say that videos from like live clips, and I didn't realize this until I read it recently that it's from like the Japanese tour, because the Japanese tour was early on in the tour uh first leg. So that's where the clips from that video come from. Some of the Japanese shows.
SPEAKER_03So the US leg of that tour was the latter part of the tour.
SPEAKER_06Um, there was I'd have to look back at the dates. There were two legs in the US. There was and it was in '87, and then she came back in '88 with that completely different look.
SPEAKER_04Okay, and that's why I'm asking, because there were I mean, completely different looks.
SPEAKER_06Completely different looks. I'd have to look at the dates, but I think the US leg, and then they went, I mean, they traveled all over over. I don't think they hit much of Europe during that tour, but they they they went to like Southeast Asia, Japan. It was it was pretty big.
SPEAKER_04I want to say, now that you mentioned Bet just say that, that's probably gonna be my honorable mention because I totally forgot about that video until you mentioned it. It's just it's it's it's a live video or you know, uh live clips, but it's just seeing her in those outfits. It's just like so cute, like this very innocent era, very cutesy, you know. Um yeah, it yeah, that's that's probably gonna be my honorable mention. Uh that you say that. Rob, what's your next video?
SPEAKER_05My next video, I'm gonna say it, I'm not going in order. I'm gonna say it now in case you have also taken it from me.
SPEAKER_04Because and you're only saying it because I posted a picture in the.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Well, because uh you and I have joked about this outfit for decades, or as long as we've been friends. Anything for you is a classic music video, and if I need to take get plastic surgery to you know shrink down to the size it takes for me to own this leather jacket with the fur trim, I will do it.
SPEAKER_04I will outbid the shit out of you for that jacket. But then, of course, Wes will come in and like obliterate us.
SPEAKER_06No, not with clothes. No, I'll let you guys have those.
SPEAKER_05I have looked and looked and searched every website for a leather jacket with a white fur trim for years because I think it's such a cute look. I think it's one of her most iconic looks.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_05And Carlos and I have joked about wanting this jacket for as long as we've been friends.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I think you know, if we ever do a let it loose live event, we all have to find this jacket and we should all just show up.
SPEAKER_06Ask her about it. Maybe it's in her, maybe it's in her uh vault. But I did read somewhere she who knows, it may have been auctioned off because she has auctioned off some things before. Like the 123 outfit was auctioned off.
SPEAKER_05You know what I like about this episode so far is that um my list and my reasons are just like I like this video, this is fun. And Wes has so much information in his brain that he's just like there were two key groups in this video, and their names were Jonathan and Greg, and they would have like he knows so much stuff that like I don't care about, like I would never know.
SPEAKER_06Like everything I read about this, it it when you're younger, stuff stays in your brain. When you're older, as you know, you forget things easier.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but my reasons for all these videos are just it was cool. Well, I prepared, bitch.
SPEAKER_06I did read some, I read some stuff before. Wow, there's a lot of things for everything. There's a lot I don't remember about. You know, I've seen the videos as we all have millions and millions of times, but um, yeah, there's a a good book out there with some um facts about some videos that I didn't know about.
SPEAKER_04So I'm gonna I'm gonna jump around uh just because Rob, you mentioned anything for you. And this I I cheated here, but I cheated for for a reason. Um here we are. Anything for you cuts both ways, three different music videos, but they all have one thing in common, which is her curly hair. Yeah, I mean, those videos really showcase that 80s beautiful locks that that she was so known for. Um here we are. I love I love when she's by the window and she's got like that cutoff shirt, um, with the the necklaces with the rosaries and um just the that whole look and the curly hair. Anything for you to your point, Rob. The jacket is iconic, but once again, beautiful, long curly hair. And then cuts both ways was one that I did not see that video until much, much later in life.
SPEAKER_06It kind of falls in the category with can't forget you. Yeah, it was kind of uh Yeah, right. It was really they both were released, but I don't know, they they just didn't receive the airplay that the other videos did until they now they're available available digitally, and you can find all of these pretty much on YouTube, uh as we all know. But um, yeah, but when we were growing up, we didn't see that video for years.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Beautiful, beautiful, and you know, and she's known for the the long curly hair. That was just you know, that was that was her her signature look, and that there's that common thread between the three videos.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, she f I'm trying to remember if I read it. I have a little book here with some stuff about it, and yeah, she filmed that one in late February of 90, so not very long before the bus accident. Which one? Here we are. Oh no, no, cuts both ways. Cuts both ways? Yep, yep. So that all was going down, and the single was released about the same time as the bus accident. So you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay, okay. Wes, which is your next video?
SPEAKER_06So we're going back to the cuts both ways here. I couldn't help it. I've I just love, love, love Oyemi Kanto. It's just so cool video. I I love that video, don't you? It's that it's on the beach. I love her look. It I should have used another album, but I I keep going back to that.
SPEAKER_04Well, that's your favorite album.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I can't. I love that video so much. I it's on the evolution um home video. So we got the, and maybe that's probably why you know we all had that home video and watched it millions of times growing up as a kid. So yeah.
SPEAKER_05I didn't realize how much of a story that music video has until I watched it last night. Like it I'm it's a loose story. I'm probably making it up, but it seems like almost like there's two glorias. Like you've got the gloria being, you know, possessed on the beach, you know, from you know, touched by the spirit, and then you've got Gloria and the blazer, who almost looks like the missionary trying to save them, you know, right? She's in the she looks like two completely different glorias. Like, oh my god, I've got to you know, bless these people. Will you say that the the latter part of the video, she lets it loose? She lets it loose for sure. It's the one of the hottest she's ever looked, first of all. Um, and it was cool. Yeah, really let go and just have fun, you know.
SPEAKER_04Well, there's that whole santeria element to it as well. And I know that um because of that video, then you had a lot of people, especially Latinos, you know, believing that she was into santeria and all that stuff because of you know, something like that. And that's just part of the the culture, you know, especially Cuban culture. It's very normal, not that we practice it, you know, you know, me personally or her, she's mentioned it as well. Um, but uh I I think it did surprise uh a lot of people to see that element added to the video. All right, so you guys overlapped with we did oy mi gangpoint.
SPEAKER_06So it's the first overlap. Let's see. We only have a few left. So see if there's any more, any more overlaps.
SPEAKER_04Rob, do you do you have another one on your list?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm jumping around again and I'm going all the way to Destiny. Ooh, which one are you gonna choose? I'm doing I'm not giving you up.
SPEAKER_06That's a good one.
SPEAKER_04Because oh well, wait. So the original version was coming or the remix version.
SPEAKER_05Oh, either one. Um, I watched the original last night, and what I didn't realize as a kid, I realize now, is I may be wrong, how inspired those looks and those scenes are by Frida Kahlo, in my opinion. There's one room in particular that literally looks like one of her paintings, and Gloria's in a uh a dress with lots of different patterns on it, and um her hair is a little bit, you know, wild, but every one of the scenes in the video almost look like portraits, you know, like she's against that flower portrait in one scene, and then the Frida Kahlo inspired look in another. It is one of her artsyest, most avaristic, most beautiful and thoughtful music videos. And I didn't realize until yesterday that it might have been inspired by different artists.
SPEAKER_04I love that. I love that look where she has the you know, the very curly wild hair, and then the different red streaks, yeah, the red streaks in it. Um, you know, when we at least for me, when I saw the video for the first time, I we had only seen the remix version, so it's kind of like sped up um uh a bit. And it wasn't until years later that we had it available, probably on YouTube or whatever. And um, I love I love the intentions behind that video, um, the original version of the song. It's just it's so beautiful. Um, the imagery used, like you said, it's very artsy. Um it's it's probably one of yeah, I I have to agree, it's probably one of her more artsy artistic videos, and it's just it's chef's kiss. Yeah, it's stunning. I agree.
SPEAKER_06Yep, I agree. I don't remember seeing that. I mean, I can't say that I watched VH1 a ton during you know, at that point in time, but like you know, we I did when I was a little younger. Um, but I remember definitely remember seeing Reach a lot, a lot of everything. Reach was definitely on everywhere. Yeah, that was it. I don't remember seeing I'm not giving you up very much.
SPEAKER_04And party time wasn't really no, they didn't air party because I I remember having Vage One on religiously during that time just to see if we would uh party time video. I got to get my first glimpse of the party time video walking out of a Sears store because remember, they were sponsoring the tour, yeah. So they had a TV outside with this billboard, and the TV was showing different uh clips of different videos, and one of the videos that they were showcasing was a party time video. That's the first time that I had seen um that video.
SPEAKER_06I think that's when we started seeing like more of those music video stations, like MTV VH1. They were moving into they narrowed down the videos that they played, in my opinion, unless they played more of a broad, yeah, you know, yeah later at night. Yeah, they yeah, it it changed a lot from when we were younger. Like I felt like they played everything, you know. That's all it was was music videos, and then it started changing a lot, like in the later 90s.
SPEAKER_04Later 90s, we we did get in in the early morning the VH1 would air Heavens What I Feel. Um, we didn't get anything after that for that album, and then the last video that I remember um MTV playing uh was music, Music of My Heart with InSync. Yeah, yeah, but that was a big deal during that time because they they they had, I mean, it was on TRL every single day, you know. It was like the top video or one of the top videos. So that was probably the last time that we saw one of her music videos on one of those music channels. Yep, especially luckily we get we had YouTube afterwards, so then slowly we started you know getting all these videos, and now you could just find I mean, thanks to so many fans around the world, we have so much available, probably everything good quality too, which is great. Absolutely another video on my list is um wrapped and oi. Of course, that to me is just when I saw what uh we had seen um some distilled photography prior to the release, and I'm like, oh, this is an interesting look. Like, what what's happening here? Because you know, you're used to her getting all dolled up, and um, there's uh this whole appeal, right? Um as a musician, but then now you know she looks like she's going hiking somewhere. What what's this about? And then the video comes out, and we're like, Oh my god, this makes total sense. Like it was just everything about that video, the song is just out of this world amazing. Yeah, and then the video and I think correct me if I'm wrong, because I've I know that she's mentioned this before. She to this day is the only artist to have ever recorded a music video in Machu Picchu. That's probably true. Yeah, I believe that. Um, what an amazing. I mean, I'm I'm still dying to visit Machu Picchu specifically because uh after seeing that video, yeah. It was gonna recreate it. Uh you know damn well. I will tell you now, everyone and let it loose land. If I go to Machu Picchu, I am sure as hell we're gonna recreate everyone.
SPEAKER_05Exactly.
SPEAKER_04We're waiting. Absolutely. So, yeah, that that one to me, and I mean, regardless if it's the English version or Spanish version, um, there was the version that we have now of either, it is there is a slight little change that they made. Um, there's a scene, there's a scene where um the guy is like falling over and you know she's she's grabbing uh this guy. Um there was something different about the video originally, and for some reason they they changed that one little clip. Um I I remember that vividly. But um, yeah, that's that's probably one of my faves, too.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's a great video.
SPEAKER_05It's in my opinion, it's not on my list because I knew you were gonna pick it.
SPEAKER_06I had a feeling he was going to.
SPEAKER_05In my opinion, it's it's our best video of all time. It is just high art, stunning, beautifully done, like matches the song to a T. Everything about it was so intentional. It's just incredible.
SPEAKER_04Can we talk? I know that this is not music videos, but can we just uh talk for just one moment how amazing her music, the way that she is able to celebrate so many different cultures? I've learned a lot about music and different cultures because of her, you know, the way that she's incorporated the Peruvian sound to uh to songs like Rapp and Oi, um, the way that she introduced us to the Colombian Curulao with uh Farolito and Steal Your Heart, No Pretendo. Um, so many different um, was it um uh No me dejes de querer? The very beginning was like a Panamanian uh uh sound. Um uh so I mean kudos to to her to kind of you know going out of the box, not just sticking to uh pop sound or just Cuban um sounds, but kind of exploring different cultures and introducing so many of us that weren't familiar to these sounds. And I know I kind of went off the rail there with with my little No, that's super that's very important.
SPEAKER_05Important, no, you know, I mean somebody on the Conga Facebook group just posted a an Abrindo Puertas um press conference that she did. And Abrindo Puertas, I think, is what a really great example as an album of the fusion that you're talking about, right? Um also Treces is a fantastic music video, but uh she talks about yeah, she talks about how it is an album that has Colombian music, merengue from the Dominican Republic, like you're saying, Panamanian music, like there are it is a fusion of all sorts of different sounds. And she said that when they started experimenting, all these sounds just sort of meshed together, and it wasn't like them trying to jam in, like, oh, we need to do a merengue or we need to do a cumbia. It just all sort of fused together, and you have to have an incredible ear for that to work, and they have the most incredible ears in music, I think. And they created all these incredible sounds, so amen to that. That's amen.
SPEAKER_06Yes, I love learning about it, and I can't speak to a lot of it because you know, I have to go back, I don't remember, you know. Um, but I I mean that's first how I was introduced to all this stuff, and I I mean I don't remember what songs from you know each country, but you know, when I do look into it and I was like, oh wow, it does it, it's it's like wow, they did do that. That's pretty that's pretty awesome, you know, that they expanded as much as they didn't stay, it didn't stay in a little box, like doing the same thing over and over again.
SPEAKER_04Do you remember now that you mentioned different countries, the there was a concert back in the early 90s, I think it was during the Into the Light Tour era.
SPEAKER_05I know where you're going. I know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_04She did, I can't remember the name of that uh that special or that concert, but it was with a symphony.
SPEAKER_06It was right at the end of the uh end of the light world tour. It was at the Miami Arena.
SPEAKER_04It was at the Miami Arena, and I think she did one of the most amazing um, and I mean this this takes this takes a lot for someone to do this because she went ahead and took a song from almost every or maybe every single Latin American country um and just did one huge long medley.
SPEAKER_05And my God, like it was called A A Night in Harmony. A night in harmony. It was in a 23 minutes long.
SPEAKER_04Mad respect for that, because to memory, these are not her songs, these are other singers, you know, other artists' songs. I mean, they're famous songs, uh, a lot of these, or most of them, and but putting them all together, 20 something, you know, 20 plus minutes of just doing this one long medley, and she freaking killed it.
SPEAKER_05Oh, she and she looked awesome too.
SPEAKER_04And she looked amazing. So, yeah, this has nothing to do with music videos, but I just have to throw that out there.
SPEAKER_05No, but you know what? I'm gonna tie it back. Okay. Wes finishes his point. I can tie it back. Okay, let's do it.
SPEAKER_06What I find is interesting is like um with that, is you know, the videos out there, I think the whole concert was released on Univision or um one of the Spanish networks I read. Um, and there's clips of it on YouTube, but she finished the end of the light world tour in March 14th. I'm looking at the dates now, and then that concert, I believe, was like March 20th. It was a couple weeks after that. So to think, wow, that's a lot of rehearsal. Yeah, it was a lot of it was a lot of rehearsal to like a short period of time to rehearse. For something like that, because she had been on tour, you know, the entire month of February, March.
SPEAKER_04And let's add, no teleprompter at that time. Yeah. This is all based off of just, you know, memory. So yeah, she killed it.
SPEAKER_06It was very different than what what uh I mean, I didn't see it until much, much later, but very different than what any Gloria fan back in that time frame was used to her saying not anything like that. She had the like that go away look. I don't know what you call it. But you know, like the dress. That's exactly it was very yeah, it was um I remember the first.
SPEAKER_05Is that your tie-in? That is my tie-in, exactly. She's wearing a flower in her hair and the black dress, and she is dressed like the go-away music video, which is my last pick. Okay, and it is pure total camp. It is a camp fest of a music video. You've got the lips and the legs and all that sort of uh fun. I don't even remember what movie it was from. Was it like got um the Ted Dancing Whoopi? Made in America, made in America, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Whoopi, whoopee Goldberg, Will Smith, Ted Dancing.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah, okay. So a very loose tying. Some I think maybe some clips from the movie were in it. There were in a version of it or not. Yeah, but what a fun, huge spectacle of a music video. And fit the song perfectly.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it did.
SPEAKER_05And one of my favorite Gloria looks uh of all time, you know, just that it's a fun video, old school Cuban.
SPEAKER_04And then when she would perform it, she would actually, you know, there were there's there's some clips that you can find online where she has very similar looks.
SPEAKER_06It was in um UK, I think she did like a promo tour during the UK in the UK, and there were some talk shows where she wore that yeah kind of outfit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's not a song that, in my opinion, she's performed enough because it's such a fun song, and it's a song that people can still resonate with depending on your affiliations. You can sing the word go away.
SPEAKER_06It was very different than what anybody had, you know. I don't remember anything like you know, that it's like who brought who came up with that idea of a song, but yeah, I think Larry Dermer wrote it. Maybe her and Larry Durmer, I don't remember, but yeah, it's still a fun song.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it is a fun one. And speaking of fun songs, um, my last pick, and there's so many, like I said, I'm sure if we did another list tomorrow, it would probably have some different song. But um, I do have to put La Vecina in there just because I that was that was such a fun video. And Rob knows when when we were at the Kelly Clarkson show, she premiered it there, and I boohoo cried, and not because it's a boohoo cry type of video, but you know, um I had moved um out of Florida, um, and it just reminded me uh so much of home, you know, seeing where she used to live and uh in Miami, and that reminded me of of kind of where I came from. And so I oh my god, I lost it. I lost it that day. Emilio turns around and Emily turns around and they see me crying. I look like a freaking idiot because everyone's having fun with this fun song, and I'm just blue hoo crying. Gloria's looking at me uh on you know from from the stage and she's like, What? What's wrong? Her assistant comes out during commercial break and she's like, We weren't sure what was happening. Like, was the was the video that bad that you you know it made you cry?
SPEAKER_06Like, what the hell is going on?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was a lot of emotions happening, but it was such a fun video, and how cool was it that she was able to go back to the same spot where she first lived when she moved to Miami, and the that the building was still there, and she was able to create this fun video with Amara La Negra and with all these dancers uh and with the family. You know, Naive doesn't participate a lot in any of these type of uh events, and to see him there with Sasha and Emilio and Emily, um you could tell that she had a blast. The domino. Domino's with the Bongo's Cuban Cafe logo on a great you could tell that she had a blast um filming that video.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, that is a great choice, a great pick. And how exciting that she's still coming up with cool concepts and interesting music videos at this stage in her career. Uh, for them to think out of the box and not just do a video in a studio or no video at all, which is common nowadays. A lot of people skip music videos altogether. Yeah, how special that she's still like cooking, right? That she's still got ideas and firing and all cylinders. Like, what if we do this? What if we do that? And La Vicina's such a great example of how hard they're still working.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I did enjoy how they started the video. Remember, they started um inside one of the apartment uh building, um uh one of the apartments. There's a radio and it's playing different songs.
SPEAKER_06Tresigotas.
SPEAKER_04There was another one from Noventa Mia's. Um, I can't remember which one it was, but it was like two or three songs. So it was a cute way to start the video and then go into La Vecina. Yeah, so yeah, for sure. So those are those are my five, even though I added you know some extras.
SPEAKER_06All right, did we do five already? Because I have two more on my list that I didn't say.
SPEAKER_04Go ahead and okay, go for it.
SPEAKER_06Go ahead and so maybe I missed. So I keep going back to videos. I keep now that we're talking about these newer videos, I'm like, man, all my list is the older things because that's what I remember watching over and over and over again, obviously. Mega Mix. I love Mega Mix.
SPEAKER_04Mega Mix is fun.
SPEAKER_06I love Mega Mix. That was one of my favorites, and that's where I first was, you know, I saw that video on VH1, and then where was the song? You know, we were nine, ten years old when that album, when Greatest Hits Package came out, and it didn't appear, it didn't appear. Yeah, we know you were younger. Um, it didn't appear on like a cassette single until well, it was probably right around that time. I see your smile because that single was a B-side, but I loved that video because all the old concert clips. Yeah, you know, they they meshed in old concert clips with you know the other videos, and it it's just so fun. And I could I just loved watching that one over and over again. The behind the scenes, the behind the scenes stuff, that's what I love, as you all know.
SPEAKER_04And you get to see her act, you know, being silly uh throughout. So that's it, it's fun watching that you know, that side of her as well.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_05They do live videos really well.
SPEAKER_06So then my last one, I like I said, like we're we keep saying, it's so hard to pick favorites. There's to make down to do five. But how can you not put turn the beater on on there?
SPEAKER_04That's a fun one.
SPEAKER_06That's a great, great video on top of the I'm trying to think of what the building was called when she first was it sun trust. Yeah, um, the helicopter.
SPEAKER_04An iconic building in Miami. So each time I would pass that building, you know, going to the beach, I'm like, Gloria was up there. Yeah, yeah. That was another fun part of living in Miami is being able to, you know, go to the different locations where she's filmed videos, like for instance, uh Cuba Libre with uh the lighthouse. That's that was my old stomping grounds. That's I would I lived at that beach, you know, um El Farito. Um you have the Sun Trust building uh that we would pass by in downtown Miami, where she filmed Turn the Beat Around. Um Raíces was filmed at um Fairchild Gardens, which I've been there many times. And um uh my god, what's that song? It's one of your favorites, Rob, from the Miguel uh album. Mi buen amor. Mi buen amor was filmed at the Biltmore Hotel. So yeah, it it that was fun being able to like you know, so go to these different spots.
SPEAKER_06You're saying you're gonna we're gonna take a trip to Miami and you're gonna show me all these places. I would totally twice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, whenever my friends would come to Miami, I would one of the first spots that I would take them to was to the lighthouse where she filmed uh Cuba Libre.
SPEAKER_06I wanted to I mean I've been in Miami twice. One for like a week vacation in 2007, and then the last was for the the party, and I was there in for less than 24 hours, so I need more of Miami.
SPEAKER_04You know, since we're on the subject of music videos, we do have to kind of throw out some old, old, old Miami sound machine videos, which Wes, I believe you had mentioned this um VHS that was like a bootleg um back in the mid-80s, I think it was the Miami Sound Machine Greatest Hits or something like that. It had the most random videos, like there's a video that she recorded, the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Oh my god, yeah. Like, where did that come from? Like, how did what was that about?
SPEAKER_06So, here here I got some information on it. So it was basically all of those were formed or filmed in Puerto Rico, and it was, I think, initially gonna be for a TV program. Um, and for some reason it didn't come out, and um it came out on a bootleg VHS tape called Videos Exodus and Videos Exodus, yes.
SPEAKER_04I have a I have a bootleg version of of the bootleg.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, somebody sent me a copy, like a copy VHS on VHS. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, it has beat it, she sings beat it, beat it, gloria of all songs with Gloria. Um Memory from Cats?
SPEAKER_05From Cats. You haven't seen that? I don't I've seen none of this. I've never seen this.
SPEAKER_06Memories, yeah. Oh, you have to, as soon as we log off.
SPEAKER_04You have to.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's there's the first version of Dr. Beat, which was a cheaper version. Yep. She works hard for the money. Um Lu Chare.
SPEAKER_03Lu Chare.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh. Yep. I need a man.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. I have to go back.
SPEAKER_05I don't remember a lot of these, but I've seen some of those videos, like music videos, but I didn't know there was a whole have you seen the one for Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy?
SPEAKER_04No, you gotta see that. Those were some fun videos, very interesting videos.
SPEAKER_05I do love how campy they used to be, like in the 80s with Dr. B, even with Gonga, like how much they leaned into like, yeah, this is fun. Like, let's have fun, let's be silly.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely, absolutely. And then I I can't end this episode without mentioning it. I know that we've talked about it before. There's been comedians that that have even joked about this, but rhythm's gonna get you amazing video. That's gonna be another honorable mention, but my god, did it scare the living crap out of me when I was young?
SPEAKER_02It did.
SPEAKER_04That song, that video, it just scared because I didn't I didn't put two and two together. I when you're talking about rhythm's gonna get you, I'm thinking that there's something, there's this boogeyman, you know, called rhythm that's gonna get me at night, you know. And it makes sense why one would feel that way because the original, the original intention behind the song was the boogeyman's gonna get you. So that's why there's this whole vibe, and of course, you know, listening to that as a kid, I'm like scared, you know.
SPEAKER_06Okay, I gotta, I gotta say something here. There is not one damn music video that has scared me. What are you all thinking? The only thing, the only thing that scared me as a kid was Stephen King's It Pennywise terrified me, but there was never a damn music video that terrified me.
SPEAKER_04It was it was yeah, there was something about the song and then seeing you know the the guys in the makeup, uh, you know, uh I don't know. It it just it scared, it did scare me.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, I I see where you're coming from, but yeah, no, I guess.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so so those are back to that's your honorable mention.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, back to the videos exotose. Me and me and Naib, I can confirm with everybody that it's a bootleg because this came directly from Emilio. I asked me and Naib were chatting on Instagram a few years ago about you know collecting. And he asked me if I had ever seen this boot video VHS tape before that he came across. And he's like, I asked my dad about it, and he said it was a boot, is what Naeb caught it, and it was the Videos Exodus thing. And I was like, how cool, he didn't even know about it, but he found it somewhere in a store in Miami, the old VHS tape, and he bought it and asked his dad about it. And his dad's like, Yeah, no, that's a boot. That's funny. That's funny.
SPEAKER_04Do you guys have uh any honorable mentions?
SPEAKER_05I have a few. Um It's too late is beautiful. I think the um Live for Loving You video is a lot of fun. Yeah, we're gonna do a Spanish version of the same episode, so I'm holding my Spanish favorite music videos for that episode. So I'm not gonna say all the ones that are still on the table because there's a lot that we can talk about for the Spanish ones. But it's too late was really cool. I think she looked beautiful in that. And live for love.
SPEAKER_04Not everyone looks good when they're wet.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the wall's grind. It's crazy. And she looked amazing.
SPEAKER_06She did. So kudos to her. But honorable mention, how can we not mention everlasting everlasting love? Oh that one wasn't that's true. That one was even nominated for an MTV video music award, I believe.
SPEAKER_04Oh really? Is it wow?
SPEAKER_06I'm pretty sure.
SPEAKER_04Actually, now that you mentioned MTV Music Award, the only the only video that ever won an MTV award was Oya Mikango.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, for oh yeah, that did. I know that did. I forgot about that.
SPEAKER_04Yep. It was uh an international award.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, because Emilio has I saw a picture of the the the award on behind his desk on a photo at um in his office.
SPEAKER_05Was that the moon man? Is that that award?
SPEAKER_06The moon man, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, fine. So she does have a moon man.
SPEAKER_06Because I remember thinking, wow, they had an MTV video music award back, you know, in the in 1990, but yeah, they apparently did. Yeah. So I'm pretty sure that that Everlasting Love was nominated for an MTV.
SPEAKER_03Was it a Billboard Award?
SPEAKER_06Maybe it was a Billboard Award.
SPEAKER_03So I have a feeling it was a Billboard a lot.
SPEAKER_06I could be, I don't like here, here I am, the the the guy with fat. I could be totally wrong, guys. So we'll have to correct us if um put in our comments if if I'm wrong.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, correct Wes. So now I guess you know, Rob, you mentioned that we're gonna be doing a Spanish episode. So I guess I have to sit down, have a drink, and do my homework to see which Spanish videos, even though I did include La Vecina in there. I threw that one in because the other ones OE has an English version, Hotel Nacional's in English. I chose wrapped. Here we are. Anything for you because both ways. So yeah, La Vecina was my only cheat.
SPEAKER_05That's okay. Wes, you're gonna have to tell us your favorite Spanish one so we can include it in that episode too.
SPEAKER_06Okay, all right, all right, TVD. All right, well, all right. Well, Rob, you want to wrap it up?
SPEAKER_05That's right. If you like this episode, don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, give us five stars.
