Hi everybody, it's me, Gloria Stefan.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to Let It Loose with Carlos Robin West.
SPEAKER_06Don't miss it. Hey everybody, welcome back to a pretty special episode of Let It Loose. It's so special that West decided not to join us. He's not here. And also, I'm gonna lift the veil a little bit. I'm gonna let people know the real truth about what's going on. We're recording this at 8 48 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Our guests are joining us at 9 p.m. My lights dim and turn off at 9 p.m. Well wait because 9 p.m. your time. My time, yeah. But it's not the same time as that's why we're joining our that's why our guests are joining at their time. But like it's nighttime. This is let it loose after dark. After dark. Like this is like that part of Cinemax that you weren't allowed to watch as a kid.
SPEAKER_04And you have the whole vibe. You have the whole let it loose after. I wish people could see this whole vibe that you have going on. Meanwhile, I have stadium lighting.
SPEAKER_06No, I know. You you like an overhead light. I do. I've got the orange lighting, the mood lighting, I've got a glass of wine. Like I'm I'm ready for bed.
SPEAKER_04I well, who you tell me? Because you know I go to bed, you know, I go to sleep early, so this is definitely way past my bedtime. But okay, so just at FYI, the reason why it's just the two of us right now is because Wes decided to hang out with family or some bullshit like that. I don't know. But it's I mean, it's kind of messed up that it's always us two that gets that we get left doing you know the work.
SPEAKER_06I'm gonna I'm gonna take a random day off and not tell not tell him and be like I will murder you.
SPEAKER_04I know you and I don't know that's a good thing to say on a podcast. But yeah, no, you're you're not allowed to. So I feel like can we call him and just tell him that Gloria's joined the call just to see, you know, first of all, first of all, to see if he picks up and a to see what his reaction is.
SPEAKER_06What do you think? I've had enough wine that if if Gloria shows up, I'd be fine.
SPEAKER_04But whatever. So not only does he not join, but then he ignores us too.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he really hates us. He did not pick up. He went to voicemail. He went straight to he hung up on you. Wow.
SPEAKER_04That little shit. Anyways, there goes my there goes my master plan. Whatever.
SPEAKER_06So since he's not here, who's gonna do this week in Glory History? I'm doing it. And I haven't also haven't told anybody what this episode's about. This episode is um this episode is a different format for us. We haven't done a round table yet. Just with a few fans from around the world talking about just random a random topic. And the topic this week is the unwrapped album because this week in Gloria History, the unwrapped album came out. The unwrapped album. Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna give Wes a little credit for this. I'm gonna give Wes a little credit because he wrote me a very extensive Google Doc. Oh, did he? Oh yeah, it's it's extensive. And I'm gonna tell you what. Uh ask me when I've read this.
SPEAKER_04You're reading it now for the first time?
SPEAKER_06For the first time, here we are. Here we are reading this document for the first time.
SPEAKER_04Uh did he just copy and paste what what's on Wikipedia? It's possible.
SPEAKER_06Uh or he got it from Chris Chris Dirk's book. Chris Dirk, yeah. He went to page 865 of Chris Dirk's book and he found this information about Unwrapped. Unwrapped came out on September 22nd, slash 23rd, 2003. It was produced by Gloria alongside Emilio and Sebastian Chris. Gloria wrote lyrics all in English. John Marico wrote them in Spanish. Um, what else we got? The entire album was recorded live in studio. Okay, here's a question for you. I'm not gonna read this question. Is this your impression of Wes?
SPEAKER_04No, I'm trying to read how much wine have you had already? A lot. It's bedtime. See, I um I couldn't drink wine and do this because I would be half asleep right now.
SPEAKER_06That's that's how that's how I'm um what I'm gonna say is does anybody remember and I don't know if I put this in the group chat or not, but does anybody remember when the Unwrapped album came out and Gloria released a PDF of her handwritten lyrics for the album? Do you remember this? A PDF of the handwritten lyrics.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so this is something that I've been thinking about in preparation for this episode. This PDF that you're talking about, wasn't there a note that a little push was written while she was on a cruise? That I don't remember. I just remember the handwritten lyrics. I do too. I vaguely remember, yes, I vaguely remember that, but I also remember seeing somewhere, but you know, the the problem with me is half the time that I tell you guys something, I it's me talking shit because I it ends up not being true. That's very true. So it's just like uh these imaginary facts just you know pop up in my head, and I believe that they're true.
SPEAKER_06Here's the thing if you are a fan, you could tell Carlos anything and be like, I heard from someone. I will believe it.
SPEAKER_04He's that I am that gullible, but I mean it kind of makes sense because look, look at the lyrics. Funny how you never know where your heart is gonna go. Suddenly you're being pulled into a rising undertow. What started as a little rain grows into a hurricane, riding on a wave desire flowing, crashing through your veins. I can totally see her on a cruise ship. It's there's a storm, and she's writing this. I'm I hope I'm not making this up. I really hope not.
SPEAKER_06I believe you. It's a very, it's a very good thing. It's a very good thing.
SPEAKER_04Someone, please tell me I'm right. Someone write to us and tell me.
SPEAKER_06Was written in traffic, you know.
SPEAKER_04Okay, that is true. That is true, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Like you, you're on to something.
SPEAKER_04I'm on to something, and then you know, and it's funny because some of these things that I say, I'll go back and ask Gloria, hey, is this true? Was this and she's like, no, and then I start questioning her. Well, maybe she doesn't remember.
SPEAKER_06That's true.
SPEAKER_04You're like, Well, you know, she's not a lot. I'm questioning the Conga Queen. How dare I? Oh my god. All right. So I I think we're ready for a little bit of music, and let's bring our guest in. All right, so today we have we're international today. We have, we're gonna start off, we're gonna start off domestic. So we have Tanya from California, and then we're traveling all the way to Thailand with Eduardo, and then we're jumping over to Australia with Eddie. Welcome, guys, to Let It Loose.
SPEAKER_06Thank you for being here. And now you can see why it's so late in New York because we had to accommodate all these time zones. It's amazing.
SPEAKER_04This was fun trying, guys. Yeah, this was fun trying to coordinate this, but thank you guys for actually, you know, coming together. And I know it's really, really early over there. I know someone on this group, I'm not gonna be the one to share, but someone on this group partying all night and came went straight to this Zoom meeting.
SPEAKER_00Um I'm not so trustable to wake up waking up early, so I I gotta be sure that I would make it on time.
SPEAKER_04So you're you had a host you're in party mode, you're in party mode already, so that that is awesome. You know what's funny? I'm looking at the show notes right now, and it says Wes gives a little background, facts and figures on the unwrapped album. Well, guess who's not here?
SPEAKER_06Nope, sure isn't.
SPEAKER_04And I I did that already for him on his behalf. You did, you did, and thank God, because when it comes to facts, I am horrible.
SPEAKER_06I am also terrible. Like, I'm not I'm not factless, I am a factless person. I do not care about where something charted. I am not a fan for the sake of the numbers or the sales or the number or the accolades. Wes is that person, and we are grateful that he has his lane. But for me, yeah, I couldn't care less. Just give me the music, just give me the music music, exactly right, Tanya.
SPEAKER_00I only had that question for him because in the photos that he posted, I saw an edition that it's blue, the C D. So I wanted to know where he found it.
SPEAKER_04Probably in Thailand. You probably have it in your in your backyard and you don't even know it.
SPEAKER_00I have a cassette, but that I don't have that blue one.
SPEAKER_06I love that you brought your cassette to the Zoom. Like I I don't keep a lot of physical media, but the only thing I still have from my youth is my mitier cassette because it was the it was the thing, the physical thing that made me a fan. So I still have that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, you can't get rid of that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, it's in my it's in my drawer with my socks.
SPEAKER_07Oh nice place, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Where else where's it gonna go?
SPEAKER_01Predict it.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. What else is in that drawer with your socks? T-shirts.
SPEAKER_06Don't be don't be disgusting.
SPEAKER_04Hey, it's let it loose after dark.
SPEAKER_06Exactly.
SPEAKER_04It's after hours. All right, so the reason why you guys are here is because uh I know that the unwrapped album holds a special place in each of your hearts. So, what better way than to celebrate? I mean, this the week that this episode comes out is actually the anniversary. So it's uh Rob, you said 23 years, right? I didn't say anything, but yes. Oh, you didn't say anything? I just made that. You see, once again, making shit up.
SPEAKER_07Oh was it September 13th?
SPEAKER_06September 22nd, slash 23rd, according to Wes's document. According to the Google Doc that Wes wrote for me. But it was the old source. That's right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so let's let's start with Eddie in uh Australia. What are your early memories surrounding Unwrapped? And uh, do you still remember your first listen?
SPEAKER_02Well, unwrapped for for me. Well, my background is Peruvian. Um, I came to Australia back in '93, so that was almost like to me, Unwrapped was the second mitra for me, to be honest. Um, because unwrapped means a lot for the Peruvian people. Um, Gloria hadn't been to Peru since 1986, since Miami Sound Machine. She went to do a show in in a feria del hogar, which is what they they used to do, which was this big thing. And then when Unwrapped came, it had been over 20 years since Gloria had even touched or gone to Peru. I know that she had obviously been working with Jan Marco and other Peruvian people in her team. But up until that time, we knew Gloria, we loved Gloria, we supported Gloria, but it was almost like there was nothing that really said, okay, that's my song. That's that that represents us, you know. Gloria represented the Latin community, but there was nothing to say that sounds Peruvian or that has a Peruvian instrument. Then when Oi came, exploded. So to me, to me, it was like, you know, riding that wave, like from far, but still being able to see and be part of the whole community. She was all over the TVs, like you know, interviews and everything. It was huge. Um, so for me, the first time I listened to that song and getting a little push from that moment, it was almost like there's a part of the song that says, Um I'm letting you know that you're about to fall in love. Exactly what happened with that album. So for me, that album means means means a lot, means a lot. Um, both English and Spanish. Um, so I know a bit biased being Peruvian, but yeah, English and Spanish, it means a lot. It holds a very um deep place in my heart, to say the least.
SPEAKER_04And then, of course, the video for the song that must have I mean, what when you saw that, what was your reaction?
SPEAKER_02Well, look, to put it into perspective, Gloria is the only singer or entertainer in general that has been able to actually film in Machu Picchu, which is this sacred place where even tourists are not allowed to go to the places that she was actually able to stand in, um, because that's the middle of the ground and everything. I've gone to Machu Picchu and it's rather far. Um, so for the Peruvian government to actually give her that opportunity, we knew that it was going to showcase what we had. But the video in itself, it it looks like it's Machu Picchu, but it's very different, many very different places in in Cusco. Um, you've got you've got the lake, um, you've got Machu Picchu in itself, you've got this other part in Cusco where she's actually doing the where Emily is on the back of the actual truck. Yeah. That's another area that's not Machu Picchu itself. That's another part which looks similar, but it's different. And also where the carnival dances are, it's all over the place. So she actually showcased our culture in in a very it wasn't subtle, I'll tell you that much. Yeah, and and that's the reason why we we felt really connected. Um, and a lot a little fact, and I'll I don't want to overtake everyone, but I'll just say it quickly. Rapped, if you hear the actual song Rapped, the the song Rap, it's about a love song, like you know, from one person to another. When it's translated in Spanish, the song Oi, um when Jan Marco started um writing it, who's the the writer of or or the composer of the actual song, um, he wrote it for Peru. Um, so the actual song, if you actually and you don't know that until you actually put it into perspective, if you listen to the words, he's talking about the love that he has for his homeland, homeland, a personal love. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So that's why isn't his version or the version that he wrote um instead of uh playa that he uses Pueblo or something like that, or Blasa, there's a there's a difference because even when he sings it, he doesn't sing playa, he says, he says, I I want to say blah, it's blasa or plaza, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Right? I never knew this. Yeah, I never knew this. This is amazing.
SPEAKER_02Yay, I knew something, and the part that she goes, when he sings it, he sings it, Berte Pintado Yasul, Peru. And you can actually check his videos, it's all over the show.
SPEAKER_06Oh, it's got chills, that's amazing. That's so cool, yeah.
SPEAKER_02So that's the reason why I say that's mitierra part two, because it's almost like Mitiara took me to my homeland. It was released literally when I arrived in Australia, and then when Rapp came, it was like, oh my god, it's almost like bringing me back to my actual place, not just as a Latin person, but my actual birthland. So, yeah, very special for me.
SPEAKER_04You know, I saw him perform, I saw him perform last year uh in Denver, and you know, the the theater was filled with Peruvians, and when he sang that song, your people just went bonkers, and it was so lovely to to just watch that, and yeah, you know, when he mentions um uh Azul uh Peru, I mean people just go crazy. I have videos uh of it, it's it's beautiful, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But thanks to Gloria, because she not only sung the song, but she actually brought Peru to the world, and that's why we like if we loved her, like as I said, back from Miami Sand Machine and singing Orange Express and all of that. Like, you know, it's we wish she would actually go back a lot more often. She's only been twice, so if we want her to go there a lot more, maybe I can go back there when she goes there, but you know, that'll be another conversation.
SPEAKER_04Hopefully, fingers crossed. How about you, Tanya? Do you remember your your first time hearing um the the song? Uh which actually I know this story, but you could go ahead and share it.
SPEAKER_07Oh, when the album or the song? Well, I remember remember she did um Gloria Okade a preview. Yes. So it was I forgot where they posted it. So there was this preview, and they had the songs, and I believe it was with the preview that she had intros and she talked about I think at least eight of the songs. That's when I first listened to it.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I remember when AOL right, that was my first listen. AOL went ahead and showcased uh Rapped for the very first time.
SPEAKER_05Okay, this yeah, AOL.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh. And you, you and I, we were on AOL Messenger or AIM Messenger, whatever it was, sure, the entire night because you were trying to rip the song from the internet, and you were on a mission to try ripping that song. And I think it was 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. my time, and I'm there supporting you and rooting you. I'm like, you can do it, you could do it, you got this, Tanya. And it was around 3 or 4 a.m. You sent me a message, you were like, I got it, and then you sent it to me.
SPEAKER_06But why bother when you're listening to it and it says AOL first listen? I don't know during the song.
SPEAKER_04And that's funny that you mentioned that because I totally forgot. And yes, you're absolutely right. What she ripped had the AOL listens.
SPEAKER_06Well, because I remember that feeling of like it was the first song we got of Gloria's in a long time, and like I remember being a 13-year-old running around my bedroom as a kid being like, This song is so good, being so excited. So, like, I know that feeling, Tanya, of like, I need this song forever. And I don't care if there's a role guy.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I mean, you don't know if they're they're gonna, you know, take it off because you don't know if they're gonna take it off and you're not gonna be able to hear it again until you get the album, right? So I was on a mission, you know, it was mission accomplished. I have to go back, look at the file, and see at what time it was created, but yeah, I mean, I remember pulling that lighter definitely. That is that album is so good. That that's my pacifier. If I'm feeling down, I'm in a bad mood, and it just takes me away. It just calms me down. It's my pacifier. So good.
SPEAKER_04And and why don't you know how about for you? Would you do you remember the first time you heard it?
SPEAKER_00I remember, guys. This is the first album that I listened from Gloria. Really? I that at that time I was 14 years old or 13, I don't remember exactly, but I was lost following Britney and Baxter Boys, and when they started doing music that I didn't like, I was like not having any singer that I preferred to listen to. And one day, uh, there was this show in Mexico called Otro Rollo with Adal Ramones, maybe the Latin is here, know what I'm talking about. Uh he announced in 10 minutes the show will start, and the guest today is Gloria Stefan. So I watched the show and I remember the audience going crazy because she did the four songs in Spanish. And actually, if you go to YouTube, you could watch two of those performances the still there, uh Oi and Temare. So if you wanna feel how crazy the audience was, then you could go to YouTube to look for it. But what it clicked for me was the interview that I've been looking for it, and I really want to watch it again. So if some of you have the interview, please post it out there. Because she mentioned many things, and I think the the most important thing for me that she said is when they were speaking about the accident, for example, the host said, like, okay, in the back of the album, the cover where the songs are written, you could see the scarf. Maybe it's better not to talk about that because it was such a bad time. And she said, No, on the opposite, this is a thing that I want to share for people to realize that we have power, that we have a strength to that make us uh move away from difficult situations. And for me, at that age, was actually where it clicked. I didn't speak English at that time. I'm not sure if I'm speaking English now, but you speak it perfectly. But but at that time, I didn't understand the songs. So my first love with the album was coming first with the songs in Spanish, okay, and with the rhythm and the voice. I was trying to imagine the intention of every song, that the intention that Gloria put in every song. I was trying in my mind to imagine if it was a sad song, a fun song, a sexy song, as I eventually I realized when I started speaking in English. But for me, this album is the most important one. It's the one that made me a fan, that opened the door, that gave me the key to different rhythms, and that really connected with my soul. So for me, this is the it's the first love. And you never forget the first love.
SPEAKER_04I love that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You know, I enjoy all the albums that I had the chance to go backwards and listening to them. I think the second one that I got was Destiny. And all the albums that came after, but this one is the most duo.
SPEAKER_07First of all, it just touches your heart.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. This might be the record of like I'm about to burst into tears from like that's the album that gave me the key. I'm like, oh my god. That really hit me. Um, so this might be a record for like fastest cry on Let It Loose.
SPEAKER_04Um look at you having emotions, Rob.
SPEAKER_06I don't well I've had one.
SPEAKER_04That that's been me lately. What the hell?
SPEAKER_06Um I cry for anything. That's such a good way to put it of like the album that gave you the key to like to enter into this world, and then to go from unwrapped to destiny is major. Absolutely. Oh my god, like you really hit the ground running on like the two best English albums.
SPEAKER_00To be honest, I didn't plan it because it those were the albums that actually I could find in my city. I'm from a very small city in Mexico, so those were the only ones that I could find in the record store. So eventually I did a very long search to trying to find the rest of the albums, but it took a time.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. What are your favorite songs from that album? And like I know that you had like a little bit of a backward relation with the album, like you wanted to figure out like what each thing was first, and like discovering that there were no sexy songs on that album.
SPEAKER_00Well, into you is very sexy, yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's true.
SPEAKER_00I feel so so in love, and I want to hug a special one when I listen to all the verses. Like, I feel the blood inside of me moving faster than ever. Every time that thing of me you and me together, god, you know, like this. Yeah, but my favorite songs actually are Dangerous Game and I Will Always Need Your Love. For me, I Will Always Need Your Love should have been a single. Oh, interesting. The sound of the bass and the voice of Gloria kind of having these metallic, you know, high notes sounds so attractive, and still today I think it sounds very fresh. So for me, those are the most special ones. I love the lyrics in Dangerous Game, I love this complicated relationship that she's portraying in that song. And of course, I will always uh need your love that I think it's a song dedicated to Emilio, and actually in the album, the lyrics are in the picture where they are holding hands, so yeah, it's like both sides. In one, you are suffering because you are entering into a forbidden relationship, and the other one is like the happy outcome when you are actually with the person that you wanted to be at the beginning. Yeah, so those ones for me, I mean, of course, I love Oi and I love the versions uh in English of the four singles, but to me, Dangerous Game and I Will Always Need Your Love are the ones that I'm listening almost every day. Tanya, what about you?
SPEAKER_07To me, the first one is Unwrapped. I absolutely love that song. I love it, love it, love it. And um are another one. Um I mean, I love all of them. And you know what? I love famous, but it makes me sad. I don't know why. It just makes me sad. Um and dangerous game, yeah, that's a really good one too. Just the lyrics, you know, they just like grab you, you know, when you're listening to the song, they just take you somewhere else. I really like them a lot. But unwrapped, yeah, that's that's my comfort song. That song means a lot to me.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I have you guys, you guys have mentioned a special place in my heart. You guys have mentioned uh dangerous game, and there's some lore around that song. Do you guys have you guys ever heard a true story? I don't know, that's the problem. I don't know if it's true or not.
SPEAKER_00I don't know the story, but I guess that there is a story that I want to know. I know.
SPEAKER_04You know, this this album supposedly is very autobiographical, and it's not that she you know that she was cheating, but there is a story about the good old Conga online mailing list where she used to lurk. Can I keep this in the episode or do I have to cut it out? You could keep it. I mean, hopefully, someone could come back and say this is what it is because I've heard a few versions of this story, and I'm I'm dying to know what it is. But apparently, she used to lurk, and something went out of hand one time or you know, uh, with someone, and I don't know what it is, and I want to know.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, we all want to know Tim Moso and once again, I'm so gullible.
SPEAKER_04So you can tell me any story, and I'm gonna be like, Oh yeah, that happened for real.
SPEAKER_00This is a new section called Cheeseita time.
SPEAKER_06I would love that. I would love that on the time.
SPEAKER_04I think you're onto something there.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, we should do that.
SPEAKER_07Hey, that's another album. That's another album, that's the last album.
SPEAKER_01And then at the end of it, you can say inocena.
SPEAKER_06Tanya, it's so interesting that you think that the that famous makes you sad. Because to me, being 13, 14 when the album came out, famous was the first song that made Gloria Estefan, the untouchable holographic icon, a real person. You know what I mean? Like when she descended from Earth and like became somebody with feelings or somebody with like like like a push-pull of emotion. Like that was the song that was like, oh, she's like, she's got all that stuff that we've got.
SPEAKER_04And I could see that because I remember I always looked at saw Gloria as this strong person, this strong female that would just not break, right? You never saw her crying, you never saw, you know, uh getting getting emotional. So once that song came out, it was like, oh, it like it hits you hard because it's like, okay, what's going on behind behind all this this facade of this strong person? And not to say that she's not strong because she is. I mean, we know that, but it it kind of humanized her. You know?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04So that was very interesting to see that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Eddie, what about you? What are your what are your favorites from the album?
SPEAKER_02Um, other than the the the normal or or the singles, I guess, that were released. I really get into you, the song you. Um for some reason, like that's that brings up my vibe, as in if I'm feeling down or if I need to get energized, I put that song on. Um, I listen to that song when if I have if I ever want to go running, which I do every now and then, I'm listening to that song. Because it's got like the rhythm and everything. Like, I don't know why. I really do enjoy it. Um, you know, I Will Always Lead Your Love and One Name. Like, you know, there's there's really good songs on that album that I guess if you were to say which one's your favorite song, it's really hard to choose. But for some reason, the song you like, you know, really hits somewhere in my being that actually pumps me up.
SPEAKER_06And so while you're running, you're like, you're right, I mystify, sanctify.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm praying as I'm running.
SPEAKER_04That's that's funny.
SPEAKER_01So yeah.
SPEAKER_04So Eddie, uh, were there any songs that grew on you that uh changed for you over time?
SPEAKER_02As in that that I didn't like, that I'm liking more?
SPEAKER_04Or that you didn't, yeah, you didn't, you know, you didn't gravitate towards that song at the beginning, but yeah, because we're thinking like 20, 23 years later, like we're all in different spaces.
SPEAKER_06So like maybe there's a song that like didn't hit the hits or you know, changed your perspective.
SPEAKER_02I don't I don't know if this is gonna be um stirring the pot, but the song Famous, as you as you the song Famous, as you all have said, it's really personal, it's really about her and everything. And I just don't know whether or not it it felt like part of that album in regards to how the actual ending of like the last songs of the album were. Oh, like that song, it's almost like I think if we should have been, and I understand that it was at the end to sort of send a message at the end of it all, but it to me it almost felt like it should have been like a a bit a little bit more of a gym. Like, you know how cities back way back when they used to have hidden tracks?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02To me, it felt like it should have been a hidden track.
SPEAKER_06Um it's sort of like yeah, like it's Alanis Morriset had that one like have a one-minute silence and then silence gets start.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like they used to put it either at the big before this the actual album started or at the very end, and they were like, it would actually have like 13 tracks, and then all of a sudden track 40 was the hidden track. To me, that should have been a hidden track, and not because I didn't think that it should have been um listened to by everyone, I think it should have been more put as in this is really me, and not everyone can get to hear it.
SPEAKER_06Oh, not everyone can get to know it. Interesting, yeah. Yeah, that that is very interesting.
SPEAKER_02Not that I didn't like the song, I just I just felt that at towards the end of the album, it just didn't go with the vibe. It's almost like you started on a high, and then like you, as as Tanya said, it was like almost like really going the other way, I think the other side of the coin in regards to your like you know, where you had left off in the album and and the feeling that you had.
SPEAKER_04That's a really cool idea. Um, Tanya, how about how about you? Were there any songs, you know, 23 late 23 years later that you enjoy more now than than before?
SPEAKER_07I think I wish you.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_07I think I wish you because you know, back then when you know it was the concerts and all that stuff, I was going through a lot of stuff, and then there were a couple of people, you know, that were acting stupid towards me. They were acting very terrible and making things hard for stupid reasons. And um and this song changed my perspective on that. So okay, you know, despite of what they did, you know, I wish them love. That's it. Um am I gonna be their friend? No. If I see them while I say hello, yeah, you know, because I'm the bigger person. But um, yeah, I just I wish them love. You know, I I see that and even um from that time when I was like, okay, I you know, I hear Gloria's message. Yeah, okay, I I guess I can wish them love, but now it's like, oh definitely, yeah, I wish them love. You know, I hear it's just totally different now. You know, when you hear the songs. So yeah, that one you know, I think that one for me.
SPEAKER_04With those type of experiences, you come to realize, especially as we get older, that you know, sometimes it's love that those people need, they lack love, you know. Um, so I could see the message, the intent and the intentions behind that song. Because I think, you know, with uh in Gloria's situation, I think there was some stuff happening um behind the scenes that not everyone knows, and this song came about, and it's just it just goes to show the type of person that she is that yeah, you could screw me over, but I still wish you love, you know, because hey, karma, karma will get you some at some point. Eduardo, for for you, what's uh is is there a song that you've enjoy more now?
SPEAKER_00Well, I enjoy them more now because I understand the lyrics before. Oh, that okay, that makes sense. For example, at that time I was thinking that into you was like a motivational song because she was giving these speeches like you could change your reality and everything. I thought that it was something that was into you that you could look for and overcome any adversity. Then later, many years later, I realized that it was not that demeaning. But no, there isn't, I mean, I like the songs, I like the whole album. I don't have any song that I've been discovering now that I can understand the lyrics and everything, that I don't like it. On the contrary, I like it even more every day. And when Eddie was mentioning the famous is the closing song of the album. Well, that depends on the edition, because the edition that I got in Mexico was ending in in the meantime, and actually in my iTunes, I have I have uh unwrapped and I have the unwrapped Mexico that I ordered the songs in the same way that the album was presenting them at that time because it's kind of like a nostalgic thing for me, like listening and living those golden times. But yeah, there are many editions that the the order of the songs are different.
SPEAKER_06Wow, where is Wes?
SPEAKER_04Because I he would be able to give you the catalog numbers right now. Yeah, the next world edition.
SPEAKER_00But I did my research, so it's Latin America and Spain that we got that edition. So the first four songs were in Spanish, and the rest of the world didn't get the four Spanish songs, like for example, the ones that I got in Turkey or here in Thailand, they don't have the Spanish bonus tracks. Oh, and I think that you in I think in the US you got the one with the Spanish songs, yeah. I guess it's like at the end, at the end, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So it's famous, and there is a little little pause and then the Spanish track. That pause is so weird. It is, right? It is.
SPEAKER_07Oh, I was gonna say that I think I've worn my CD out because I was listening to it a little while ago and it was jumping. I'm like, oh no, I finally did it, I finally wore it out. It was like it was skipping.
SPEAKER_06I love that you're so listening to the CD of it. That's amazing.
SPEAKER_07I like tangible tangible, you know. I mean, digital's great, but you know, if I'm here in the house, I can put it on there for put it full blast and just you know, listen to it. So I think I've worn it out.
SPEAKER_06Wow, you know, for for me, like I I remember when the album came out, like Say Goodbye was my favorite, which is crazy. Not that it's crazy, but it's like but I was like, I'm listening to it now. Like, were you sad when you were like 14 years old?
SPEAKER_04No, you were dramatic as hell.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's 100% what was happening. I was like a very dramatic 14-year-old who was like into the the OC and like this is a perfect singer song, write a song. Like, it was very much of that era.
SPEAKER_04So there's this young Rob that's listening to Say Goodbye. He's growing up, he also has I Know You Too Well on as well.
SPEAKER_06Absolutely, all the dramatic songs. Oh my god, absolutely. But like Carlos, what about you? Has any of the song have any of the songs changed for you growing up? Like growing up, growing up.
SPEAKER_04Um you grew up. I grew up. Which song? You know what? It's it's hard to say because I love that album, and destiny for me is number one, and the gloria album is is right there. Unwrapped destiny for me. I I I love more than unwrapped. Unwrapped is just it's just like a hair away from from destiny. I it's a one and two for me. Man, I I can't say that there were any tracks that I didn't enjoy. I mean, I wore that out. I wore it that so Tanya, you're talking about the CD skipping. For me, the CD would skip when it got to Dangerous Game.
unknownReally?
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_04Every time that it got to Dangerous Game, that's when it started uh skipping. I wore that CD out. And before before it was released, we actually had the um uh Tanya, you had mentioned it where she talks about each of the of the tracks. Um, so it was it was the intros. The the intros. And so before it was even released, I already knew like most of these songs, or you know, the majority of them. I don't know. I I I can't say that there was any track, uh, there were any tracks that I didn't enjoy. They they just if anything, I just love them even more 23 years later than than before.
SPEAKER_07It's so weird because the album came out, I was an adult, and you know, here like Carlos an adult, but you guys are like 14 years old, 13 years old, and it's like, wow, these were children, yeah, you know, young teens, and it's just so whatever, whatever I'm an adult and these are young teens, you know, it just makes me really happy.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but like no one has a feeling like a teenager, like teenagers have the more feelings than all of you.
SPEAKER_04Like we had we had all the colors of emotion at 14 years old, you know, and like but how cool, but how cool is that that at that age, Rob, so you're 14, you're listening to this is basically more adult contemporary, a hundred percent.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and it was putting words to feelings that like we didn't know we had.
SPEAKER_04There's a certain vibe, you know, there's a certain maturity to that album. It just it it sucked that you know, realistically, yeah. I'm speaking to you. You were at one point this 14-year-old that enjoyed the hell out of this. Yet, yeah, if you look at the the reviews, they were horrible, horrible.
SPEAKER_07So, how is it like how is it that yeah?
SPEAKER_04It was just I remember being in Vegas for the Live and Unwrapped show and reading You're in the DVD.
SPEAKER_00I have seen you screaming.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was in the DVD on the bonus. That's when it all got started. Um I remember being in Vegas and reading the review, and I was like, I was so shocked that these people just couldn't understand, couldn't get it. Like she was trying. This is her she's written before. This is not the first album that she's written for, but she wrote for this album top to bottom. She poured her everything out of her into this, and I just don't understand how people could listen to that and not get it. These adults are listening to it, they don't get it, yet a 14-year-old can listen to it, and well it just clicks.
SPEAKER_06You know what? This album, in my opinion, is her Magnum opus. Like it it very much reads like a like a farewell album. And I will say, like, like You said the same thing about Raíces. No, no, no, no, no. But I mean, like, like Quentin says that like this album closes out an era, and it definitely does. Like it it certainly closes out like the era of albums that were like Hold Me Through Me, Kiss Me, Gloria, like all of them are concept albums, right? And then that era closes. But um as a 14-year-old, like you know, she was putting word to feelings that like we weren't getting social emotional learning in Catholic school, like she was like really giving her all, like doing her songwriting to the umth degree, right? Like she was doing everything she could like as a songwriter, and the fact that people couldn't accept that or read that really shows the sort of like pigeonhole quality of the American music uh consumer. Yeah, like they pigeonhole an artist into you are a conga queen, you make party music, and that's all you do. Like where is where are the horns, you know? And the fact that she didn't have any horns on this album, and she warned us, she said something at some point in an interview or in Conga or something. I remember horny literally, yeah. The the the consumer or the reviewer couldn't accept that, like they couldn't see that Gloria Stefan could evolve, could do something different, could could grow in the way that we were all growing.
SPEAKER_04Like it's funny that you mentioned that because the the review that I went back to read that same review that I read in in Vegas, and he kind of he kind of alluded to to that, you know, it would have been nice if we would have had some old school Gloria, you know, uh included in this. Why? Why, you know, I I think the the album from top to bottom was perfect. There was no need to add, you know, um there was no need for more of the same. She was going off doing something new, which to your point, Rob, you know, she had all these concept albums and she was killing it with, you know, it was such different sounds. Every couple years it was a new album and it was a completely different sound, completely different vibe. And she did that with this one. I think she hid it out of the park. It's unfortunate that these um these journalists or these reviewers didn't, you know, um, couldn't see that. But hey, you know, sometimes you can't trust.
SPEAKER_06But sometimes an album is for the fans, like sometimes an album is not for the writes for, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That I I think so too, Tanya. Like, I think sometimes the album is not for the masses. Like, I would say destiny and unwrapped are like Pinky Promise sisters, like they live together. You know, they are they live together in this world for the fans. Um, and maybe a reviewer is not ready for that, and that's okay.
SPEAKER_02I think I think that sometimes you actually realize that like similar to what Rob was just saying, that those two albums, like if you talk to the fans in itself, Gloria's had many great albums, but those two albums, they seem to be the ones that everyone as a fan or And Estefan, they really do appreciate, you know, and it's got nothing to do with the commercial sales. And once again, like Rob said earlier earlier on, I don't care about the charts. I don't care about the numbers. Like I just want it to be what I connect with. Obviously, with him and with some of you guys, you know, connecting when you were on your teens, some of us a little bit older, uh, maybe in the early 20s, um, you know, it just connected with us, regardless of where you were or what your background is or what it was, you connected with that. Reviews are subjective. I always say music is the language everybody speaks, you know. Eduardo was saying that he would enjoy that album even though he didn't know what he was exactly saying. And that is like, you know, that is connection. That is where people, as a fan, you would find that the albums that are most appreciated are not necessarily the ones that sell the most. And sometimes the reviewers just put people in a pigeonhole where they go, this is how they should always sound. And they're not ready for that change to happen because it's sort of like, I've got someone else to do that for me. Wrong, yes, but you know, that's that's how sometimes people don't exactly get it. And we just have to accept it in a way. Like we might not agree, but we just go, Well, you don't get it, you know, you don't see where she's coming from, and that's okay as well.
SPEAKER_06What I love about um, let's say an artist like Harry Siles, he said that his fans are just along for the ride and they're ready for any type of album that he's ready to put out. And he's learned that about his fans that they're they're gonna come out, they're gonna support, they're gonna buy the album, they're gonna go to the concert, they're gonna buy the t-shirt. And you know, Gloria I think feels that too. She hasn't said that, she hasn't been like cocky enough to say that, like in the way same way that he is.
SPEAKER_04Um, but like Unwrapped is a risk of an album, you know, and Unwrapped is a risk of an album, but think 23 years ago, some of the albums that came out, and if you look it, and this goes not just for unwrapped, but just her catalog in general, where you know, listen to the destinies, the unwraps, the um uh hold me through me, kiss me, abriendo pure. I anything that they put out, it's stood the the test of time. Because if you listen to those albums now, like for instance, I'm sure we all listen to Unwrapped in preparation for this recording. You listen to the music and it's just so fresh that it could have been released today, and that's what they are experts in doing because they've done it for many, many years. I mean, you know, with this whole podcast, I I've been you know, revisiting so many of the older albums, primitive love, let it loose, cuts both ways, and you listen to it and you're like, holy shit, like this sounds fresh. This sounds great. It whereas many of the albums, heck, there's albums that came out last year that already sound dated.
SPEAKER_06If you're chasing a sound that's already out, you're gonna be chasing that thing that's already popular. By the time you release it or master it and record it and do other things, it's old.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so I do have a question because there, this album comes out, we end up getting live and unwrapped, we end up getting live and re-wrapped, and then of course, there's all the shows and all the performances, yeah. So and one of those during that era when you discovered the the album, was there a favorite live performance uh for you?
SPEAKER_00To be honest, I didn't watch much because I only watched what it was on TV, so I remember watching those four performances of the songs, but eventually in the record store, the I the only one that was in my hometown, they brought the DVD live and unwrapped. So I was crazy watching the concert and discovering all the songs that I didn't know that existed. Uh but I've been dying, guys, if you have any connection there, to at least once, once in my life, one of the concerts of the tour she did to promote the album, Live and Re-Wrapped, because I've never been able to see it. So I really want to watch it. It's the only show, maybe along with the Millennium Concert, that I would like to watch at least once. So maybe for the celebration of the 25th anniversary, we could video. Yeah, but I I it's not not live and re-wrap. Not and rewrapped. Yeah, not live and re-wrap.
SPEAKER_04Live and unwrap. Yeah, live and unwrap. I think, yeah, I think the issue, but not exactly. Yeah, and they actually so for live and rewrapped, and I know this because I was I was there for the Miami shows. The the the two Miami shows that they had, they actually recorded uh in did they? They did.
SPEAKER_06I was there too. Oh, were you? I was, I was in the back row of the floor with my dad. You were in the back on the floor? On the floor, yeah. I was in the back of the floor. Oh my god, both night.
SPEAKER_07I don't remember where, but I was there.
SPEAKER_04That would be funny if we were like sitting right next to each other.
SPEAKER_06I can't imagine. I would that would be amazing. But yeah, we were back there.
SPEAKER_04That's funny. So Live and Rewrapped was uh was filmed, but I think what and this is just me, this is just a complete assumption because it was so similar to Live and Unwrapped. I think that's why they probably weren't able to to release that or you know, market that it would it would have been lovely because there were many moments that were not the the same, very special moments, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Reach, like the Cuba, you know, like there were lots of special moments in that show. And we never have enough.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I agree. Tanya, how about how about for you? Was there a special life uh performance during that era?
SPEAKER_07I don't know. I just I I had a really good time in Vegas. I don't even remember how many shows I went to. I think 10. I think I went to all of the shows. That was fun. You know, I'm not gonna sit down, I'm not gonna pay money to go sit down, right? And I even got to go to the rehearsal. That's another thing I got to go. So that was one more show. And um, so I was dancing, and then the people kept complaining that were behind me. And I kept standing up to dance, and then Frank comes and he's like, Tanya, the people are complaining. Can you come to the back and stand over here in the in the wheelchair area? I'm like, okay, Frank. So I went over there. He's like, You can you can stand up all you want and dance right there. So I went back there, and that's where you know, nobody left me unless I was just dancing away right there, but yeah, casino crowds, where a lot of so bad. Oh my god, those people with their comp tickets. Yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Eddie, how about for you? Um, I really enjoyed the performance of I Wish You on the DVD, The Love and Unwratch. I don't know why so good.
SPEAKER_04That performance is so good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that performance, I don't know why, but it's almost like I don't know, it's like looking up at her and like, wow, you know, and yes, the song is great and everything, but something about that performance, or maybe the editing, I don't know, but that particular performance was to me, it's it's it's wow. Um, that's probably the one that I that I enjoyed the most in in regards to that era. Um, and I also enjoy, I guess, and and I guess it's not from that time, but when she did 90 millas and she performed Oi in Peru. Um, she did it with with um, well, she did it with Jam Marco, and then she also changed the actual she used an audio from Guamakeno, which is an Argentinian song, which is like it gives it a totally different spin to Oi. So that was actually interesting to hear as well. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_04Do you guys remember the when the album came out? She did the AOL sessions.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, those were so good.
SPEAKER_04I watched them today, and then she did the salsa version of Oi.
SPEAKER_05Yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yes, there were many remixes from that era. No, I I love some of them, especially Pablo Flores ones.
SPEAKER_06The Pablo Flores. Um, I will say I'm not a remix person, but the Pablo Flores remixes are very good. The Tracy Young remixes are very good, yes, but the salsa versions of Oi and Tu Fotografia are the last we've gotten of the salsa version era. And I wish, I wish we got more salsa versions of songs. Like Gloria, if you're listening, release a salsa album of songs you've already previously recorded, do a salsa version of songs that already are out.
SPEAKER_04I would I would love that. I would absolutely of course and then bring John Marco in to do us the salsa version of Oi. There's already a salsa version, but just bring him on.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, exactly. Bring him on. Um, I would like to know. We talked a little bit about where this album ranks for us. Like for me and Carlos, it's in the it's in the top, it's in like one or two. As far as English goes, it's in my it's in my top, right? But like where does this album rank in the huge discography of Glorious? Right? So uh Tanya, what about you? Where does this album sort of fit in your top?
SPEAKER_07It's right up there. I think this one, this one I think is my go-to. Definitely my go-to. This one's number one for me.
SPEAKER_06Number one. Okay, wow. Okay, yeah. Eddie, what about you? What where does this album fit for you?
SPEAKER_02I think to me it's number two. Um it's it's it's not it's not number one. And I think to me, Destiny will always have a special place in my heart. I've only seen Gloria once in concert, and that was during the Destiny tour when she came to Sydney. Funny enough, the where I live, it's actually two blocks away where she actually did a public appearance, and you see me as a 15-year-old, like you know, in the line trying to get an autograph and everything. So that was very special for me. So that's why Destiny has a special place in my heart. But um, I don't know that this whole album, even the like, and I know that we haven't spoken about it, but the artwork, even on the so good, yeah, and the meaning behind it, and like you know, the the fact that that artist was writing backwards and everything. Like, there's so much that so much effort that went into this album that it's almost like there's it's really hard not to appreciate it, you know, for the music, for for the for the way that like you know, things were done. Like to me, it will always be a number two, and as I said, destiny because of other reasons, but yeah, this one's number two for me.
SPEAKER_06I feel you get it completely correct. Eduardo, what about you?
SPEAKER_00For me, it's number one, guys. There is no other one that will take that place. I love, for example, Raises because many things happen in that era, many dreams came true related to Gloria. But for me, this one is the most special one of all her career. I'm very happy to be in the middle of her career, let's say, because all the major albums already had been gone, and I have the chance to revisit them after. But this one is the most special one, and I have 23 years to absorb everything, to try to analyze the lyrics, to get into the energy, the intention, and knowing the fact that I was not able to understand the lyrics, but still falling in love with Gloria, I think that's a proof for me of Gloria's power. If I had the chance to cry to those ones writing a review, I will say, like 23 years later, a guy that didn't understand English fell in love with this album. And still today, Gloria is the most special singer of his life. So that's power, and that's what makes her connect with a lot of people all over the world. So for me, this will be the one I was remembering. I was I remembering using all the photos for my stickers in the notebooks in the school, trying to paint with the spray the symbol of Umrad that the the Carlos had has uh behind his tattooed, yeah.
SPEAKER_06And I have a tattoo.
SPEAKER_00I I'm planning to do that too, but also Julio, my friend from Mexico, maybe you know him, Julio Frausso, he had uh a necklace with the symbol. I don't know where I have that too.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_04It was part of the the fan club. I think uh she sent it to everyone.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it was a special gift.
SPEAKER_04It was a special gift, yes. Okay, so I'm not crazy. No, you're not crazy.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I am but I was gonna say, not for that reason.
SPEAKER_06Before you ask your next question, Carlos. My mother will kill me if I don't say that she's the reason I got to see so many of the live and re-wrap shows. Because she was driving to pick me up from high school, sophomore year, and the radio was doing a contest, and she called in and like knew music of the heart for whatever reason, and got us into Madison Square Madison Square Garden, and then got me in to see her for two nights in Miami. I love that. She is the reason why she was an enabler for this crazy fandom that now she gets listened to once a week.
SPEAKER_04And she listens, unlike my mother, she listens to the show.
SPEAKER_06She listens, and my father listens separately, so they we get two subreddites.
SPEAKER_05That's right.
SPEAKER_04That that is awesome. You know, it's funny with the live and rewrap. I I went on tour with with Gloria. We I ended, I I saw her in San Jose, I saw her at Madison Square Gardens, I did the two Miami shows, I saw her in Atlantic City, we went to Connecticut, we went to Boston. I this is how crazy I was at that time. I and this is the enabler. The enabler, the enabler was my best friend Samantha, Samantha out in New York. She would tell me, listen, just open up a credit card and just buy the tickets. Don't worry. So I every week I was opening up another credit card and maxing it out because I was flying over here, flying over there. I yeah, I was that was 24, uh 2004. So I was like in my mid-20s or something like that, and I was in so much debt. Um no, I think I paid that one off. I think I just finished paying off the 90 millas uh tour, so I'm I'm ready, I'm ready for for some more tours. But yeah, so I think uh listen, we could go on and on about this album, and I'm sure that at some point we'll end up doing a deep dive, and who knows, we'll we'll do more roundtables because there's just so much to talk about. But I wanted to spice things up a little, and we have a little rapid fire, and our rapid fires are never rapid, so let's see if we could be successful today, especially with a round table. But it's gonna be basically a this or that. So we'll go around. I'm gonna name two songs, and you gotta tell me which one you're keeping. All right.
SPEAKER_06Are you a part of it too? Or are we are we doing it?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it. We never all right. So um we we'll start off with Tanya. Okay, the order will be Tanya, Eddie, Eduardo, Rob, and I. All right, great. Here we go. First one rapt or oi?
SPEAKER_07My favorite? Okay, rapt.
SPEAKER_04Eddie? Oi. Eduardo. Rapped. Go ahead, Rob. Oi. This was hard, but I'm gonna have to say I'm gonna have to say rapped. Really? I'm gonna have to say rapt, yeah.
SPEAKER_00The meaning is so different. It's it's I don't know. Maybe I'm sensitive.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. But it might it might be the drink. It might be the drink. Maybe when I'm sober, then it'll be something different. Okay, next one. Yamare in English or in Spanish?
SPEAKER_07It's hard. We can say Spanish.
SPEAKER_04Eddie. English. Eduardo.
SPEAKER_00Spanish.
SPEAKER_04English. I think I think I'm gonna go with Spanish.
SPEAKER_06Oh, look, we're split down the middle.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Alright, next one, here we go. In the meantime, or mientras tanto? Oh that's easy.
SPEAKER_07In the meantime.
SPEAKER_04Eddie? Mientras tanto. Eduardo?
SPEAKER_00In the meantime.
SPEAKER_06Rob. In the meantime. Mientras tanto. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Rob, you and I have not come on.
SPEAKER_06Usually we're pretty syncopated with this one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Alright. Next one is scratch, scratch. I know. Alright, here we go. Your picture or tu fotografia.
SPEAKER_07Your picture.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04Eddie. Your picture. Eduardo? Your picture. Rob. Tu photografia. I had to say to photographia too. Yay! We finally made the win.
SPEAKER_06But I will say that of her glorious English songs, I think your picture is my father's favorite.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay. I mean it's a beautiful song. Yeah, he loves it.
SPEAKER_01But hey, are you thinking of the Slur version or the Salsa version? Like I guess that also plays a part.
SPEAKER_04Okay, that's gonna be for the next round table that we have. Yeah, I don't know. Okay, and then the last one. The last one, here we go. Into you with Stevie Wonder or one name with Chrissy Hind.
SPEAKER_07Into you, Eddie.
SPEAKER_02One name. Eduardo.
SPEAKER_00Into you.
SPEAKER_06Rob into you.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna say into you as well.
SPEAKER_06Well, because like how could you not? Like with that one like that's the best part of the song.
SPEAKER_04It's so good. I love it. I I feel I feel so bad that we're kind of wrapping up this episode because there's so much rapping. Oh yeah, rapping.
SPEAKER_00That's the first one.
SPEAKER_04All right, so we have reached our time, our moment to let it loose. And I think you guys have something uh prepared. Rob, we'll we'll sit this one out. I have nothing to say. I'm all let it loose out. So Eduardo, do you do you want to kick us off?
SPEAKER_00Uh well, yeah. I I don't want to refer to the part to this album in particular, but I want to say that I want to take the chance to once again say how much impact Gloria had had in my life. I don't think that Chiculimagine this seeing this guy living in a very small town of Mexico, listening to her album, and having a lot of dreams related to those songs that eventually some sons some dreams came became a reality. So uh if I have to choose my favorite singer, I will choose her a hundred times more, and I will choose this album to take it to the grave. So thank you, thank you so much to Gloria and to Emilio for putting so much love out there and for being present for us all the time, sending us a DM or a birthday message. And for me, the most special memory that I have now with her, and that's what I mentioned races before, it's because thanks to races, we went to Spain, and I had the chance to tell her when she was saying goodbye in the party, in the after party, to tell her face to face that I will always love her no matter what. So, once again, I will always love you, Gloria. And I hope that we could get something nice for the 25th anniversary of Umdrap, maybe uh vinyl or any other edition, that we could celebrate all together this incredible, incredible album. Thank you guys.
SPEAKER_04I love that. Eddie, you ready to let it loose?
SPEAKER_02Oh god, I felt like um Eglara just spoke for me.
SPEAKER_04Um pressure, no pressure at all.
SPEAKER_02No, no pressure at all. No, to me, it was actually something really similar. I I I guess I also wanted to thank Gloria for um, I guess as an immigrant, and I guess some of us can relate, um, having the Mitiera album coming out in the 90s or around 93, 94, when I had just arrived in this country and and and having you know been taken away from the homeland and then having that song, it was automatically my connection with that. Then obviously oi and everything. I think the I'm proud to call myself a Gloria fan because Gloria Estefan is one of the few Latin artists that I can say I'm a fan of, whether you're an English speaker or a Spanish speaker, and they're going to appreciate it. And I'm not trying to say that anyone that doesn't have that kind of um, you know, ability to be bilingual doesn't do it. It's just that it's not a trend. It's not, it's the in thing. You know, Gloria Estefong will always be someone that has been there for years. And if you actually like her music, it's not because she's the hottest thing right now. And it's got nothing to do with that. To us, it's more the meaning behind every single song and what she has done for us as a community and for us to represent us outside of Latin America. So for that, I want to thank her. And um, just to put it out in the universe, I want to be able to at least have one day or one. Time the opportunity of seeing her live. I know that it's rare, but being on this side of the world, it's so like the last time I saw her was as I said, the destiny tour. So it's been quite a few years since I saw her live. Um, so I want to be able to have the opportunity to see her. Don't need to age me, um, Carlos.
SPEAKER_01But yes, um, so hopefully the universe gives me that opportunity.
SPEAKER_04Awesome. And how about you, Tanya?
SPEAKER_07So I just want to say that when Gloria came for the promo for Unwrapped over here to LA, um, they had this thing where people would call in and you would get invited to go to the studio. And I unfortunately I I didn't get invited to go, but two of the conga people did. So I tagged along with them and I talked to Frank. And Frank's like, yeah, you can come in. So I was able to go in there. And uh, so everybody, you know, was in the studio. And so I just like stood behind two people. One was actually Walt, and the other one, I don't remember, I think it was a conga person too. So I was like behind them. And I was going through something rough at that time. And then when Gloria, after she did her interview, she came around to give everybody, you know, to say hello stuff and to give a hug. And after she uh gave Walt a hug, she just went like this and said, excuse me. And she parted them like she parted water, like a god. And she just came and she gave me the biggest hug ever that I really, really needed, and I just wanted to say thank you. And then everybody got autographs, you know, and they got these promo pictures. There were two of them. And this is my favorite, absolute favorite picture. Gloria didn't know it at the time. But Frank took my CD, you know, into the next room when she where she was at signing the pictures because I asked him if I could get it out of her. He's like, sure, give it to me. He took it over there when Gloria found out that I was, you know, um, that I wasn't on the list. She signed one of the she signed that one for me. And she sent it back, you know, with my CD. So that was cool. That means a lot to me. And that hug that she gave me, I'll never forget it. Never, never forget it. My two prized possessions.
SPEAKER_04I that had my CD. I love this. I love this.
SPEAKER_07She means a lot.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely. She's, I mean, it it's absolutely crazy. And you know, it goes back to the hashtag that we've all used so many times. You know, Gloria brought us together. The fact that we are here uh in different parts of the world. There, yeah, this would not be happening. We would not be speaking to each other or know of each other had it not been for her. So, you know, um, I thank her. I guess this is kind of my let it lose. Um, I thank her for bringing us bringing us to together for this international community um that has supported her. And you know, we've all supported each other, you know. Uh Eduardo, I I love the fact that I got to meet you in Madrid last year. That to me was uh one of it truly was one of the highlights. Eddie, I'm dying to finally meet you at some point. I know it has to happen. It has to happen. And Tanya, there's I mean, anytime that rap comes on, there's not a moment that I do not think of you and our late night AOL listened, trying to rip that song. And I mean, we've known each other for so many years now, and I think it's so amazing that we have this community.
SPEAKER_07We were babies, we were baby.
SPEAKER_04I'm still a freaking baby.
SPEAKER_07Gloria says, Gloria says, you guys are worse than the FBI, and that is true.
SPEAKER_04That is true, that is true. But listen, I I personally wanted to to thank you guys for being able to make this happen because I know we're in different parts of the world, so uh it really meant a lot that you guys would take the time, you know, even after partying so much.
SPEAKER_05Thank you for the invite.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely, and we can't we can't wait to have you guys back, you know. Hopefully that you guys would be willing to come back.
SPEAKER_02Thank you for having us. It really means a lot.
SPEAKER_06What a what a special album to celebrate, to have as our first sort of fan roundtable, because it's an album that I think means a lot to a lot of people. And I think as we put this album out, or this album, as we put this podcast out and uh have people sort of resonate with ever each one of your stories, we'll see the sort of ripple effect that this album has had around the world, even though it's not necessarily known as like Gloria's biggest album or her most famous or prolific album, it it is along with Destiny a fan favorite. And I think there's a reason why we've done two uh celebrations of these two albums first, you know, Destiny and and Unwrapped, because they mean they mean the most to us, you know, um, and to the fans. So I hope that she knows that. I hope that um that uh other fans can share their stories. And um if you if you like this episode, don't forget to like, rate, review, subscribe, uh, you know, give us five stars. Tell us your takes, your answer, like how you would respond to the questions that we've asked on this round table. And yeah, and if you want to be on another round table with us, let us know. Because like we are Gloria has a lot of albums and a lot of um, yeah. Gloria has a lot of albums that are out there, and we all have different perspectives on all sorts of albums. So, like, please uh reach out to us if you want to be on our next round table. So absolutely all right, hasta luego.
