Hi everybody, it's me, Gloria Steph, and welcome to Let It Loose with Carlos Rob and West. Don't miss it.
SPEAKER_03Welcome back to another episode of Let It Loose. My name is Rob. I'm Wes. I'm Carlos.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Laura.
SPEAKER_03And today we're doing an idea that I've had for a while of Songs of Gloria that she's recorded throughout the years that fans either had no idea about or forgot about. Kind of interesting, deep, deep, deep cuts that aren't on any of her albums. So I think we all have a fun discussion this week.
SPEAKER_04Wait a minute now. Some of them are on the albums. I had to go.
SPEAKER_03None of the ones we chose, I think. Oh wait, you chose one.
SPEAKER_04Well, I chose two. Yeah. Some may be well known to some and some may be well known to others. I think I said out there.
SPEAKER_02A true fan will know all of these.
SPEAKER_04You did say that? Okay, my bad. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's it. Pay attention, Wes.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03He's not going to start listening to Let It Loose Now around season two. He doesn't care.
SPEAKER_04Hey, we've got to have some banter, right?
SPEAKER_02Of course. Alright, but before we get into that list, do we want a little history lesson?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, let's do it. Yeah, let's let's start out this year. Let's quiz you guys and see if I can, you know, stump you, because that's always fun. Alright, do it. So this will be some tr um an album release. This is gonna be hard to quiz you. I mean, there's not that many Latin out or like Spanish albums. So this week we had an album release. I don't know how to quiz you on that. That's the quiz?
SPEAKER_03Was it Noventami yes?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, see, this is easy, so I can't really stump you on this.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I'm I'm doing great this season.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know you did great. This is easy for me.
SPEAKER_03Look at you, Rob.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. All right.
SPEAKER_03I normally get these all wrong.
SPEAKER_04So now this would be a good quiz. Top 200 on the Billboard chart. What was the what did it peek at?
SPEAKER_02Ooh, the 90 Mia's, wasn't it in the 20s?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, oh, you're good. 25. It was on the chart for seven weeks. Oh wow now.
SPEAKER_02Um and it debuted at number one, right? Uh in the the Latin chart.
SPEAKER_04Um, I have to look that up. I don't know if it debuted at number one or not.
SPEAKER_02I know that it debuted. It did peak at number one. It did peak at number one. I think it debuted, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure someone will correct us. But Noyotis was a number one. Notice was a number one. But what I thought was really interesting about Noenta Miyaz was in the Netherlands, it uh peaked. And I think if I'm not mistaken, it even debuted at number one uh in the Nether uh Netherlands.
SPEAKER_04I don't know about debut, but yes, number one in the Netherlands. They do love her there.
SPEAKER_02They do love her. Was that the last was that the last album that she released under Sony?
SPEAKER_03Um wasn't the standards one too?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, some Sony was masterworking. Yeah, so the the funny thing about Noventa Miyas is I still um so it was the it was the first non-epic album. It was released on Burgundy Records. And Burgundy Records was like a really short-lived label. Yeah, you know, yeah, because it's not even around anymore. No, but um, yeah, so yeah, it did number one on the uh top tropical albums, Billboard and Latin top Latin albums. It was um number one for seven weeks on the tropical chart, and on um the chart for a total of 48 weeks.
SPEAKER_03So wow, look at that.
SPEAKER_02Legends only. Yeah, it's gonna be fun doing a deep dive, uh, I'm sure at some point next year, because it'll be the 20th anniversary, right?
SPEAKER_04Uh yeah, next year.
SPEAKER_03You heard it here first, season three coming at you.
SPEAKER_02Well, we we did have we did have a request. Uh Quentin, if you guys remember Quentin Harrison, who joined us for season one, he has requested to join us if we ever do any type of deep dive on the Nueva Mia album. So yeah, you mentioned it was one of his favorites, so that would be great. That'll be fun. Yeah. All right, Wes, well, thank you for that little history lesson.
SPEAKER_04No problem.
SPEAKER_02He the music.
SPEAKER_03All right, so we're gonna dive into this humongous list. Maybe we'll post the whole list at some point so people can see all the different songs that we um uh dug up throughout the years. But we're starting with uh one of our favorite songs ever. I think Wes is uh is that you who's starting off? Yes, and what a song to start us off with. I think this is like definitely a fan favorite.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god, definitely well known in the um hardcore fan community, but yeah, with it being on a massive soundtrack and um to a massive movie, Hot Summer Nights, in 1986, um was one of the songs on the Top Gun soundtrack. Um it was only released as a single in Europe and Japan. So um Take My Breath Away was like the biggest probably the biggest single from that album. And then the Kenny Loggins track, I can't think of it.
SPEAKER_02I know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you know, those were those were the big songs in the United States, but um, yeah, I just love that song. And the first, I'm sure for all of us here, the first time we heard it was on the homecoming concert. The homecoming concert, yeah. Yeah, I didn't even know anything about, you know, I mean, I was little at the time, so I I knew what the top gun album was, but I didn't realize it came from that, you know, soundtrack. But yeah, that's one of my that's one of my that's my first favorite.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't think I knew that it was a studio version of it until I was much older. Same here, same here.
SPEAKER_02I the first time that I ever heard it was the live version, and then it wasn't until years later that I heard I finally heard the um uh the studio version. But it you know, back in during that time, it was it was hard because we didn't have you know YouTube's and all this back in our day.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I don't even remember when I first yeah, to speak of it. I I don't even know when I I mean that's been a long time ago. I don't know that because it wasn't like on the back of the uh homecoming concert, it said hot summer nights from Top Gun. I don't think it, you know, it doesn't say it doesn't say that.
SPEAKER_02Do you guys have a preference the live version over studio recording?
SPEAKER_04So here's my thing on this. I feel like, and um as probably most people know, I'm also a huge Dave Matthews band fan. And a lot of his songs I first heard live. So I feel like when you get that attachment to that first time you hear a song, and still to this day, after I've been a fan for many years, if I hear an album version of one of his songs, I'm like skit. I would rather hear it live because that's how I've always heard them. Um so for me, speaking of that, yeah, I I I love the Hot Summer Nights album version or the live version.
SPEAKER_02How about you, Laura? Do you have a preference?
SPEAKER_01I think live also, because you can feel the energy of the song.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I mean, is are we all in agreement that the live one is?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, similar to what Wes is saying, that like the first vert way that you hear a song ends up sticking with you for better or for worse. Sometimes sometimes you hear uh really drinky dinky recording when you're like out somewhere at some fan event or whatever, and that kind of colors your judgment. But the live version is just so much energy and so much fun. I can't imagine how fans would react if she ever pulled this song out of the vault and did it live again.
SPEAKER_01Crazy. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Don't don't don't give me don't don't give me any false hope. I know. But yeah, people would go crazy because um, and you know, it's funny because I didn't see that I came to see that movie for the first time like two years ago. So it was fun watching. Yeah, I had never seen it before. I've never seen it, and um, it was fun watching it and then hearing, you know, in the background the the song. I'm like, oh, that's so cool. I wish it would have been a I I wish it would have been a single here in the US, because I don't know, I feel like that should have been like this massive hit.
SPEAKER_04And the um the song was produced by Emilio and Giorgio Marauder, I think is how you pronounce it. And um, that guy is Giorgio is known for producing some of the mass some massive um soundtracks from the 80s, like a very well-known film. So I wasn't I'm not gonna go through all of them, but um he produced Danger Zone, I think, or maybe even wrote that song as well, or a co-writer. But um yeah, those songs, those massive songs just kind of overshadowed. I think I feel like you know, hot summer nights. But yeah, if you if you're a collector out there, um the seven-inch and twelve-inch single from Europe, the cover art on the hot summer nights single, it's awesome. I would highly recommend getting getting one getting those.
SPEAKER_02That's a great song to start us off with. Rob, I think you're next, right? I'm next. And you chose this, it was an interesting one that you chose. And and this is one I think out of this entire list, true fans are gonna recognize the majority. This is one that even a hardcore, you know, some hardcore fans may not even know about.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I chose it for multiple reasons. Picture it from Goya, a life in song album in 1989. I picked it for a few reasons. Number one, because the way I discovered it is very funny. This was before Wes was sending everybody his archives, all of his songs and remixes. This is way, way back in like the Napster days, like when you're illegally downloading stuff.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And like Napster Limewire. Yeah, I had my whole Gloria CD catalog that I paid for as a kid, CDs and cassettes and whatever. But like you, as a kid, you're just like curious. Let me just type her name in and see what shows up. And this song showed up on the songs to download, pictured by Gloria Stefan. And I'm like, this is probably a a virus, b not real. So let me download it. And then all of a sudden, she starts singing, and I was blown away that there was a song that existed that I'd never heard before, right? So I've had I had like a rinky dinky mp3 version of it for years until Wes sent me the rest of the album that she was on.
SPEAKER_04But oh, I don't know how it wasn't me. I don't have the album, I just have the song.
SPEAKER_03Okay, oh, I have the album. So um look at that.
SPEAKER_04Well, now that you said that, I gotta give a shout out to Ignacio in Spain, who was my guy, met like for years. Like he me and him are remixed gurus, so we have everything. He but Ignacio sent me those, that song, because I had never heard it before.
SPEAKER_03Well, the other reason I picked this song is because it's part of an interesting album concept. So back in the day when somebody would write a musical, sometimes they would release concept albums for them with a lot of different big artists. So, like Elton John did it for Aehen, Sarah Boreles did it for Waitress, she had Jason Moraz, she had herself. Um, and this was for a concept musical about the life of this painter from Spain, Goya, who's very famous, obviously, um has paintings all over the world. But I'm picking this song to publicly give Gloria and Emily a plea to release a concept album of Basura so that we can hear them sing these beautiful songs because the songs have been in my head since day one.
SPEAKER_02It's it's interesting that it's interesting that you say that because they actually have a concert March of next year at Carnegie Hall, where they're they're actually gonna be singing songs from Basura. So maybe between your plea and them doing the uh this concert, maybe that might prompt them to record something. That would be cool. That would be fun. That would be cool, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So this are they singing singing songs from basura?
SPEAKER_02They are, yeah. So Emily's gonna uh supposedly from what I read, Emily will be singing her songs, Gloria will be with Miami Sound Machine singing her songs, but then they're also gonna be performing songs from Basura as well. That's so cool.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, be cool, yeah. So this song was for my concept album, uh about a mus from a musical that I don't think ever ended up going anywhere. But it's interesting to listen back to those songs.
SPEAKER_04Rob, I know I I didn't know any of what you just said, so you educated me very well on that. I I just know the song. I didn't know anything Rob Cyclopedia. Oh, yeah, yeah, there you go.
SPEAKER_01And I have something that Wes doesn't have.
SPEAKER_04Look at that.
SPEAKER_01The album.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, I don't have Wes, you're slipping, man. Yeah, no, never never uh never thought about buying that one. Why not? Um, it's just not not kind of my vibe of music, I would say. It's a it's a it's yeah, it's definitely it's a it's a song that I've listened to.
SPEAKER_02It's not a go-to song for me.
SPEAKER_04No, I maybe listened to it twice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Um all right, Laura, do you want to go next?
SPEAKER_01Okay, uh, I'm going with Otro Dia Massive Verte and the English version Just Another Day from John Cicada.
SPEAKER_02And why are you choosing a John Cicada song?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I like No, no, just educate the people, educate the people as to why you're choosing that one.
SPEAKER_01Well, um it was produced by Emilio. Uh the song was written by John and uh a songwriter named Miguel Ángel Morejón. And additionally, Gloria collaborated with the Spanish version of the song and and makes a small cameo in the Spanish version of the video. So you for seconds you can see Gloria singing on the background.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you can see in the English version as well.
SPEAKER_01Oh, really? I thought just in the Spanish one. I think this was the first single from John Segada, and yeah, it makes it make number one on the Billboard hot Latin song chart, I think. Sorry, my English is not perfect. Your English is a good one.
SPEAKER_04English is fine.
SPEAKER_01So for me that was a discover at the moment. Um yeah, I used to have many albums from John Cicada because I enjoyed his voice very much, and that was a really nice surprise for me.
SPEAKER_02I'm totally having a John Cicada moment this year. I've um I hadn't listened to his song, his music in a while. Um, and the other day I decided to download a bunch of his greatest hits, and I forgot how much I enjoy his music. Um, especially like when you listen to some of the some of the songs, you could see where that inspiration for like I see your smile that Gloria uh that he wrote for Gloria. It's that's totally a John Cicata song. And um I feel like you know how they joke around how you know you get to a certain age and you're you go to the grocery store and you're hearing all these, you know, old time hits, you know, John Cicata comes on and I'm looking for raisins in aisle five, you know, jamming to to just another day.
SPEAKER_04And here's where my here's where my brain goes with that because it you know that takes me back to have buying the single or for um this song. I loved it because you know, we knew John through Gloria and the End of the Light Tour. Yeah, and you know, it was released in 1992, and I'm doing a search right now as to like you know when, but my thought is okay, they had just been on the 1991, 1992 massive end of the light world tour for like over a year, which they had breaks in between, but I'm thinking, like, you know, how do you have time to um record all this album? But you know, those songs were probably written way before, but I'm on a hunt to see what when that was when that was um released. But yeah, that that's my favorite John Cicata album for sure. And it has um just to throw another little tidbit in there that people may not know about, he um she uh he there was an intermission during the end of the light world tour, which we know. He sang his song Always Something, and the live version from the End of the Light tour is included on the album.
SPEAKER_02Oh, interesting.
SPEAKER_04I think from the show from Holland, yeah.
SPEAKER_02That was a good choice, Lava.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, very good choice.
SPEAKER_02All right, so when uh you guys drafted this uh this list, I requested that this one, this one song goes to me because I am the Miami boy here. So go Marlins. Um I think a lot of hardcore fans will recognize this one, some may not, but go Marlins uh was released. Gloria recorded this song when the Florida Marlins won their first World Series championship. And um, look at me talking about sports. Okay, Sporty Spice, Sporty Spice.
SPEAKER_04I'm the baseball hardcore guy, played it, played it on my my whole life, so I'm impressed by you.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, uh well, I it it was a big deal, you know.
SPEAKER_04Um they won the first World Series, and they were like a the Marlins were um for people that don't know baseball, you know, it's very hard to win a world series in Major League Baseball. There's 30 plus teams, and they were a new expansion team. Brand new. They had only been in the league for I think it was 93 when they came into the league. So to win a world series in 97, that's huge.
SPEAKER_02It was it was a big deal for for us in in Florida, and she went ahead and took her song higher and wrote her own lyrics for the Marlins, which was a cute, uh, cute song. She ended up there, was this huge celebration. So I actually lived very close to the stadium. Um, I wasn't able to go uh to that celebration, but what was cool was all I had to do was go outside and you could actually hear everything that was happening at the stadium. So I got to hear her sing this live from uh from my house. Uh and they they played it live. Um, they streamed it live on TV. But um, so she she sang this. Now, what was cool about the Go Marlin song, they actually released a um a single for this. I don't know if it was released nationwide or if it was just locally, I think it was just locally. And at that time there was uh Specs, so Specs carried uh the single. And in Miami, um Livon Hernandez, which was the MVP for um you know during that season, that championship, he was at Specs signing um uh copies of the Gold Marlins. So I actually have a Gold Marlins CD signed by Livon Hernandez.
SPEAKER_04I don't know that I don't know that many of our people will know who the hell that is, but still that's a cool that a player you went to there and got it signed. So that's cool. But hey, you know what? Uh we're gonna cut this out. Well, we could say this, but what do you think? Chris Dirk's all the shit that he sent me a few years ago. There was like six the old copies of that song or that CD single that I have sitting in a box here that I don't know what to do with. So hey, why don't we like I have this CD? Hey, hey, why don't um the first I don't know how many you want to raffle them off or something? Yeah, hey the first five, the first five people that send us a message, give me your address and we'll send it to you.
SPEAKER_02Maybe that's nice. We can do it if that's something that you're willing to do. So Wes, it's your turn.
SPEAKER_04Alright, so I was going back and forth with a couple of songs. Um and this one I didn't know until we're we're we're gonna do another soundtrack. This the totally totally different opposite of the ends of the spectrum by the soundtrack that we just talked about. Suave was not a very well-known album, in my opinion. I'm it was a Sly Stallone album or uh movie that everybody knows who Sly Stallone is, obviously. But Suave was released in 1986, the movie, and the soundtrack um included Suave, written by Gloria and Kiki and produced by Emilio. So I don't know that even a lot of hardcore fans maybe knew that song much until much later, like I did. I don't know, did you guys know that song early on or was it much later?
SPEAKER_02It was it was much, much later. Yes, much later, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, same.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It wasn't yeah, it wasn't a huge like the CD wasn't even a CD version wasn't even released until I just looked this up earlier looking at the credits. And there the movie came out in '86, and there wasn't a CD version released until 1992. So that goes to show you how how big the how big the movie was.
SPEAKER_01I'm using that song. The time when some of my friends is feeling with some anxiety, I send them that song.
SPEAKER_02I think you've sent it to me. Now that I think about it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I love I love that one. I can't say that's my go-to super favorite. I mean, it's not hot summer nights by any means, but um the rare factor is another thing that brings, you know, you see, for me, Suave Suave was one that when I first listened to it, I was like, oh, this is cute.
SPEAKER_02And I really wouldn't go back or repeat. This song, though, over the past year or two, has been on constant repeat for some reason. But it's also because I've been having like this early Miami Sound Machine Renaissance where primitive love, eyes of innocence, let it loose, like that whole era. I've just been playing those um uh albums like constantly. So I I put you know, I mix in Suave in there uh as well, and I'm really enjoying it more now than feeling nostalgic.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I think with old age, it's just like the whole nostalgia thing. I think you're right, Laura. All right, so I think Rob, you're next, right?
SPEAKER_03It's me, and um there are some re some remixes, some duets that I really love, and this is one of them. This is from Quincy Jones's album in 1995 called Q's Jook Joint. And this album, by the way, I looked it up, is crazy. I've never heard the whole album, but it has uh Stevie Wonders on it, SWVs on it, Brandy's on it. It is a who's who of people from that era, including Gloria. And this song is called Is It Love That We're Missing? It's got this cool funk groove to it. The lyrics are cool. There's this really fun Spanish section that Gloria does toward the end.
SPEAKER_02I do enjoy the Spanish section.
SPEAKER_03It is one of my favorite songs of hers ever, and it's such a cool deep cut. Um, if anybody hasn't heard it, I think it's gonna become one of your new favorites too. It's like on a Sunday morning with some coffee, it's a it's a great groove. I like her vocals because it's just like so very different.
SPEAKER_02Like it's so different from what we're used to. Yeah, yeah, I agree. So that that was pretty cool that she was able to like you know mix it up and and do something different. I'm glad that you mentioned the other artists on the album because I will honestly say that I've only ever listened to that song. I never explored the rest of the album.
SPEAKER_03Same, but like I'm such a big fan of 90s RB that it sounds like an album that I will love if I listen to the whole thing. Like Brian McKnight is on it. Yeah, uh Phil Collins, Ray Charles. It is it seems like a crazy cool album that is worth listening to.
SPEAKER_04I was actually going through the um booklet, I don't own it, but I found it on Discogs because I was interested in who mixed and mastered that album. Um, because it was I won't repeat the name, but anyway, Michael Jackson's like um version of Eric Schilling, who was Gloria's recording engineer forever. Um he w worked closely with Quincy Jones and they um I was looking to see if he may have recorded the Gloria section. But what really struck me is when I looked at the credits, it says the music and lyrics were by George Johnson and Debbie Smith. Okay. Because I also didn't know about this song until much later, which like most of us, um, thanks to Ignacio Ignacio from Spain, he sent that to me.
SPEAKER_01We need to invite uh Ignacio at this point.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, absolutely. That's my dude. That's my dude right there. He I'm I'm still he still calls me Little West because I was the young one that used to send me ZD singles. That's cute. CD singles back in 2000. That's where I got all my stuff, you know, from him. He's great.
SPEAKER_02All right, Laura, you're next, and I'm actually jealous that you took this one from me because this is one of my favorite uh deep cuts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, um, this is a very funny song, I think for kids.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, no. No, it's not for kids.
unknownIt's not for kids.
SPEAKER_01I don't care what you think. At the Elmo Palooza anniversary, I think.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and then later at the Rossiodonell show with Elmo and Rosita. This is Mambo Ayayay, and what I learned about this song is that it was performed one year before by Gloria Steworm, which is a worm, and they had like a festival of worms at Sesame Street. No way. Yeah, there was a puppet named Gloria Steworm play in that song before Gloria.
SPEAKER_04That's incredible.
SPEAKER_03So I think Gloria covered Mambo Aiyi because this was Gloria Steworm's song. That is hilarious.
SPEAKER_01I need to watch the video at some point.
SPEAKER_02Listen, if I ever need a pick-me-up, if I'm ever down in the dumps and I need a song to just lift my spirits, Mambo Aiyi is the one. And I'll even do her same little dance moves in the video. I think it is the cutest song ever. And no, it's not a kid's song. It's a great hype song. It is a great hype song.
SPEAKER_01I bought the DVD. I bought the DVD.
SPEAKER_02I love it. All right, so my next one is gonna be Love on Layaway, which I think is one of her more fun, upbeat Christmas songs. I really do enjoy that one. That one was uh premiered in 1999 during the um and so this is Christmas special, which was with Celine Dion and was it uh Charlotte Church as well, I believe. Yeah, that's right. Because then at the end of that special, they they sang um, yes, phenomenal. Which there's not we um not the uh single, but there's not an actual recording outside of just what they premiered, right?
SPEAKER_04That's unfortunate because they're all their vocals were just so so good.
SPEAKER_02It was really, really fun. Um, okay, the video premiered, and she had very short wild hair. What did you guys think of that look?
SPEAKER_04I did not like the short hair look whenever she first did it. I remember thinking that because I was always loved the long curls, and that was a drastic change for her. You know, I mean she'd cut her hair short, but not like that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. But that hairstyle in particular, that's how I look when I come out of the shower. So it was nice to feel to see that representation was very affirming for me. So and also it's one of my favorite songs ever.
SPEAKER_02It's such a great I love the look, I like Christmas. The the tropical feel, you know, mixed in it. It's very Florida Christmas. That's what our Christmases felt like, you know, Rob, you guys and Wes, you guys have the you know, the the traditional Christmas cold weather, yeah, terrible, not us.
SPEAKER_04I would rather be in Florida for for uh Christmas, but but yeah, if Glory Hair is this, I don't hate your short hair, or I didn't hate it, but it was just a shock at first, as you probably very well know. It was an interesting look, you know. It was I liked it after a while, but at first, I remember that scene in that first. I was like, what?
SPEAKER_02Well, there was the short hair, but then for that specific video, she did like this spice, the spice wild style. So it was like no, I like that. I like that look.
SPEAKER_01I like that look. But that was right before Ana Carimena, right?
SPEAKER_02Yep, it was it was yep.
SPEAKER_04So it was hard to find that song. It so that was in '99. It didn't appear, I think it was in 2001 on the compilation, maybe 2000 or 2001, on the compilation of it was like now this is Christmas, one of those now, you know, compilations.
SPEAKER_03There is a there was an album of that special because they also did release the um Celindion Christmas song that was on her Christmas album. I love that. I love that song.
SPEAKER_04I um yeah, what's that kind of what you're talking about?
SPEAKER_03I met an angel on Christmas Day. I met an angel on Christmas Day.
SPEAKER_02Yep. I I love that one. I love Love on Way uh Lay Away, and I love the fact that if you download the Christmas Through Your Eyes album now, there's like a deluxe version where they include Love on Lay Away, uh, as well as some other um and a few other songs.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I had an idea.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they reissued um they reissued uh Christmas through your eyes like a deluxe version a few years ago with that digitally only, but and um you the song that you are the the Celine song is on her reissue out, Rob. So if you want to look for it, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Awesome. All right, so I think we're back to West, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, let's do it. Alright, so my next one will be known, another one that's probably known by a lot of people, but then some may not, because um, it was released on the international versions of Into the Light, Language of Love. Um I Love Anything by Diane Warren, and Diane Warren obviously wrote this song. Um produced by Emilio Georgian Clay. Fun little fact about this song, you know, it's it's pretty much released everywhere in the world except for a few places, including the United States. But the song was like planned for the US version, up to the point where they had printed I saw a version of the back of the vinyl with from the US with language of love on the on the back of it. So it was planned to be released in the United States. And there was even for the collector people out there, there was even an advanced promo CD that was planned, like to the point where it had a catalog number that was canceled. So for whatever reason, they decided to cut that song at the last minute. Interesting.
SPEAKER_02I wonder how how many songs, how many tracks does Into the Light have on uh for the US version?
SPEAKER_0413. So that would have been 14.
SPEAKER_02Okay, because I know that Gloria has mentioned that 13 besides that being her you know favorite number, 13 tracks. Um, that's kind of like the cap, because anything that goes outside of that, then um the writers get less, you know, compensated less or something like that.
SPEAKER_04I just it's all royalties and yeah. I don't know if that's the rules now, but yeah, it used to be.
SPEAKER_02It used to be, yeah. So maybe that's why. Yeah, and I wonder if that was just like a US thing.
SPEAKER_04Obviously, because every other country had the international bonus tracks. Interesting. So it had to have been the United States thing, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I remember the language of love was one that I didn't know about until right much, much later.
SPEAKER_041997 was for me, or 98, when I was at I bought the the Japanese version at um at uh Virgin Mega Store in Orlando. Oh no, for me. Oh, I didn't even know. I didn't even know the song existed. I remember finding that in the import section.
SPEAKER_03I think I was just trying to digitize my music and digitizing it, like putting the song the CDs onto iTunes because I had cassettes, was when I was like, Oh, there's a whole other song. I've never heard the song before. Then and obviously freaking out as like a teenager.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it was well into the 2000s that that's when I finally figured out that there was this additional song.
SPEAKER_01That's interesting.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04That opened my eyes to the collector world and and realizing that other albums had bonus tracks as well. So yeah, it's an international thing.
SPEAKER_02So all right, Rob, you're you are next.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so I get a lot of flack for not liking remixes, not liking oont's music, but I have a soft spot in my heart for disco gloria. Okay, so I love the 70s moment medley. I love you know, anytime she does like a disco-leaning song, like right away. And this song, randomly, Desperate Housewives, a TV show in the early 2000s, had a soundtrack. I don't know if they ever played the songs on the soundtrack on the show, or if they just made a soundtrack of songs inspired by the TV series. But Gloria did a cover of the classic disco song Young Hearts Run Free. And boy oh boy, you would have thought that 2005 Me was an independent woman getting divorced from her man. Because I was living for this cover, and I still am. I play it non-stop.
SPEAKER_02I enjoy it. I I was very surprised when that one came out. That um, because like where did that come from? But and Wes, you could verify or confirm, from my understanding, that song was actually supposed to be on the Hold Me, Throw Me Kiss Me album, or was recorded for that album. Um, and then it was never included. That's that's what I heard. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's one that they had in the vault was supposed to be included for the uh Hold Me Throw Me Kiss Me, but it just didn't like really fit, so they never included it. And then that's when this soundtrack came about, they they just added it to the soundtrack. I don't know someone out in Let It Loose Land, if you could confirm or verify, but that's the story that I was told.
SPEAKER_04That um I'd never heard that before in my life.
SPEAKER_02Me neither. Never heard, but you know, sometimes I make up shit, so who knows if it's okay. Well that very well once again. This is something that someone shared with me, but I don't know. Maybe it was like an imaginary person, but never heard that before.
SPEAKER_04But hey, I'm gonna listen to that song afterwards and see if I can like figure out was those vocals from that time frame. All right, you gotta ask her because I'm I'm like dead set on not having to know if that if that song was from the vault. That'd be cool. But yeah, I never I never knew the song. I I never knew the song was a disco hit. I've never heard it before, before you know, before it came out.
SPEAKER_03Classic.
SPEAKER_01Okay, next one is also a soundtrack. Um, this is a ballad named You Can Walk Away from Love. It was written by Gloria and Emilio, produced by Emilio with uh alongside Randall Barlow or Randy Barlow. And uh it's included in the original movie Original Scene with Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie. And if you buy the DVD, you can find just 100 seconds of the video as an extra. Um I I'm not sure if in the uh uh Blu-ray you can find also the video, but maybe yes. And I heard, I'm not sure if that's uh true, that at the end and at the beginning of the first releases of the DVD, you can find like because the sorry, the song is also included in the Greatest Hits, volume two of Gloria. So in the first versions of the DVD, you can find like at the end of the video, the promo of the DVD of the um uh Song of Gloria, the album, yeah. But I have one of the DVDs and it's not in my my version, so I'm not sure if that's true or just someone invented that. I have the DVDs, so yeah.
SPEAKER_03The same person who invented the Younghearts Run-Free.
SPEAKER_02We both have we have the same imaginary friend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you can't walk away from a very different, it's different from other songs that C wrote, I think.
SPEAKER_02It it almost reminds me a bit of uh Destiny, the song. Yeah, yeah. Um you can't walk away from love as far as the video goes, it's it's unfortunate that uh they created this video. She looked beautiful. Uh that video she had the she had um at that point her hair had grown out a bit, it was uh curly, she just looked gorgeous. Um, but it seems like at that time when they were trying to promote the song, promote the greatest hits album, promote the the movie. Unfortunately, because the video had so uh so many clips from the movie, MTV and VH1 decided to not air it because of the fact that it had all these uh images from uh from the movie, which was unfortunate. Because we've seen we've seen plenty of videos where they you know uh soundtrack songs where they you know, I mean Turn the Beat Around was was one where they use, you know, um is it because the scenes were a little too NSFW, like a little too maybe teamy wee me. Maybe but it it's unfortunate because that was that was the lead single to promote um the greatest to uh greatest hits volume two, and it really didn't go anywhere. I know that it did chart on like an adult comp uh contemporary uh chart, but um it it's unfortunate that it didn't get the push. Um and then from there they released out of nowhere, and that was a a dance hit, but um I I just feel like at this point of her career, Sony just was you know dropping the ball left and right.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, it was very different from what the music was and like during that time frame, what was popular, yeah. It was more of an adult contemporary type song, and it charted pretty well on the adult contemporary charts from what I remember. It was in the 20s.
SPEAKER_01If you look up for the film, you can find it as an erotic thriller film. I don't know it's erotic at all, but it's pretty erotic.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. I I never watched the movie, but I have that DVD or Blu-ray movie just for the just to watch.
SPEAKER_01If you like Antonio Banderas, you will see his ass, you know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's not what kind of movie, but I bought it for the music video.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome. All right, so my last one is going to be i i amor from amori suerte. I don't understand. I don't understand what happened here, and once again, I'm gonna go ahead and blame Sony. Um this was the only track on the Amori Suerte album that was a brand new original song. And first of all, if it's the only track, the only original track, you're releasing this compilation. Why wouldn't that be a single? And why wouldn't Sony push this to promote the album? I never understood the release, you know, everything behind the release or lack thereof, because this compilation album comes out. It's a beautiful, it's one of my favorite uh compilation albums because it it it the artwork, the um the song selections, it just has this beautiful vibe. Um they they really captured um all these beautiful songs that Gloria has uh performed, written, and collaborated. Um so it just it's it's horrible that it didn't get the promotion that it should have. And it's horrible that this song didn't get the push that it should, because it's such a beautiful song. Um I don't know if you guys remember uh a few years ago, I think it was oh yeah, maybe in 2018. Uh I want to say, maybe later. I'm not, I don't remember, but she actually um Ill, I always get them confused. There's Il Devo and Il Volo. So Il Volo um recorded vocals around her vocals and and that track. Um, did you guys enjoy that version? Yeah, I didn't care for it. It was nice that they, you know, yeah got together and no, they're nice for the song to have its moment. Um, I I personally like the original over the collab that she did with uh Il Bolo. This was another, maybe uh another moment with my imaginary friend, but my imaginary friend mentioned that this song was supposed to have been included on the Sabata uh soundtrack, which was a movie that was released around that same time or that same year, um, but it never made it on. To the the soundtrack. That's what I was told.
SPEAKER_03I feel like that was on the sticker when you bought the album. I may be crazy and also making up imaginary things, but I could have sworn that it said featuring the song I mod coming to the Sapata soundtrack or something like that. I feel like we talked about it, not talked about it, but like that it was known back then.
SPEAKER_02People are gonna listen to this podcast and no one's gonna believe shit that we're saying because we don't want we can edit that out.
SPEAKER_04I don't why why don't I wrong no wrong lean in? I don't remember seeing that. There's I don't remember seeing that. There is a um I mean it makes sense because the sticker there, but I don't remember anything about I'd have to look.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't I don't remember, I don't recall that being on a sticker, but it does make sense that there was a possibility of that song being included in that movie because of the vibe of the song and the the movie itself, and it was released the the same year. Um, it's just unfortunate that that song did not get the push that it deserved because that should be a hit. That should definitely be when we're talking about charts and you know hits, that's one that should be up there.
SPEAKER_01I think the problem was that we had uh several compilants compilation albums, like in very few years of in time.
SPEAKER_02So but I think that was I think that was right before the because we 2006, if I'm not mistaken, Wes, correct me if I'm wrong. 2006 is when we got hit with so many compilations. We had yeah, uh the essential Gloria Stefan, and there was William Canto, and there were all these different uh yeah, there were so many compilations.
SPEAKER_04I've I'm I'm over the compilation, the very best of Gloria Stefan, there was that one, and they they did that because for people that some parts of the world just got the the one disc version of the very best of, and then most of the country most of the world got the essential package. Um, I guess maybe cost.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, they were but this one I will say out of all the compilation albums, this is probably one of my favorites. I do enjoy Amori Suerte, and I it has such a great song that could have promoted the hell out of that album, but I'm gonna keep on blaming Sony.
SPEAKER_03I'm sorry. I mean, if you're gonna do a compilation, at least throw a new song on it at the end. And they did, they did, and they got us all to buy it. The artwork was beautiful, like at least package it with something fresh.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, I I agree. Yeah, so here's here's the thing. We we came up with this long list, we selected quite a few songs, we're actually out of time. But what do you guys think? If maybe I'm sure not every single song is on Spotify or uh Apple, but how about if we uh try to get the majority of these and and make a playlist?
SPEAKER_03We could try. I think a lot of them are not available, but at least we could we could name and not talk about, but name like a few honorable, honorable mentions.
SPEAKER_02Okay, all right. Oh well, we we each had one more selected, so we could just men uh name them. Uh Wes, you want to name yours?
SPEAKER_04Don't let the sun go down on me. And that one is that one's I another one I feel like I'll do this very quickly that most people probably know about. But one of those things we need to find out, what was that song recorded for? You know, it ended up on '94's Hold Me Throw Me Kiss Me, but it was first released on B side um in February of '90. So it had to have been recorded in '89. So what was it recorded for? Like a B-side to cuts both ways or something else?
SPEAKER_03But all right, Rob, what's your honorable mention? My honorable mention is um one of Gloria's best vocals ever. Her cover of I Could Fall in Love by Selena that was on the Selena Viva album. So good.
SPEAKER_02Laura, what is your honorable mention?
SPEAKER_01Another soundtrack, Inside Your Heart, from Vivo. I think it's a beautiful song.
SPEAKER_02Deserves and video that deserved an award.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_02All right, and my honorable mention is going to be a duet uh that I truly enjoy, which is Who Can I Turn To with Tony Bennett?
SPEAKER_04Beautiful. That was huge for being Tony Bennett. I agree.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. All right. Once again, we have so many others, and they're, I'm sure everyone's gonna be like, oh, but you missed this one and that one. And yes, we we probably have this on the the list. It might be on the list. I'm sure it's on the list. We will post the list, maybe. You know, we can post it on our socials. And um, and of course, if you guys have any comments uh about any of these songs uh that we mentioned or did not mention, but are on this list that are your favorites, uh tell us why. Um, you know, use our speak pipe, which we'll have in our um bio. Um send us an email, slide into our DMs, but we we definitely want to hear from you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, tell us what we forgot. Tell us what your favorites deep cuts may be, things that you think we forgot about. That would be awesome to hear.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. All right, so um what the way that we're gonna wrap this up is Wes, we want you to go ahead and sing one of these deep cuts. So go ahead and sing tonight. So from West Side Story.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that and that would be the one I would choose.
SPEAKER_02Because we know how much you love musicals, theater, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Hey, that was a good one. I I like her vocals on that one, it was very good. Didn't um David Foster produce that?
SPEAKER_02I don't know, but we're about to wrap up, Wes.
SPEAKER_04Well, you can you can you can cut that out.
